This summer, Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner will attempt to break the world record for the longest jump, plummeting more than 23 miles from the Earth's stratosphere.
"I've done a lot of test jumps, so I'm good," Baumgartner confidently told Fox News before adding that he would "probably say a little prayer" before making the jump that could literally make his blood boil if something goes wrong.
Baumgartner has been preparing with retired Air Force Col. Joe Kittinger, who set the current world record back in 1960 when he made a 102,000-foot jump.
To prepare for the jump, Baumgartner will breath pure oxygen for nearly an hour to remove nitrogen bubbles from his blood. He will then stay at the peak elevation for three hours, allowing his body to adjust. He will then jump in a pressurized suit that will prevent his blood from boiling at the extremely high elevation.
And if all goes well, Baumgartner will set another world record during his jump, becoming the first human being to break the speed of sound in a free-fall jump.
CNN reports that the pressurized suit worn by Baumgartner is similar to those worn by U-2 pilots but that even those highly skilled airmen rarely come within 50,000 feet of his planned drop point.
Seems like a cool journey albeit dangerous
he should take a camera, that would be awesome to watch
Freefalling at the speed of sound? Holy shit

Picture from a test jump, 10 miles lower than this jump.
Would be amazing.
He is going to die
If not, I want some of that
Pretty crazy. I wish I could get the view this guy is going to have.
I would so jump this if I was given the chance
He better have a camera.
I'm not going to be impressed until someone does this from orbit. Just saying.

So do his enormous balls require their own suit or what?
RedBull's been in on it the whole time.

Is this just gonna be a fucking publicity stunt?

If wings sprout out of his back mid-flight we will know.
After falling through the atmosphere.

If you consider every other sport Red Bull funds and sponsors a publicity stunt, then yes.
Hasn't it already been done?
Is this just gonna be a fucking publicity stunt?
Redbull always sponsor daring/challenging/crazy things.
Ever seen the Redbull Air Race? Fucking crazy shit that is. They also sponsor a lot of cars in the Baja 1000 desert race

doubt he would be able to do it without funding anyways, that shit isn't cheap.
For gods sake, can people forget the "blood boiling" shit, please?
What I'm interested in is how the guy isn't going to freeze to death, then burn to death. At terminal velocity in the upper atmosphere it's going to be pretty goddamn cold, but unlike in space there will be an atmosphere to conduct heat through so his temperature will drop a lot faster than that of an astronaut, especially with the violent air current. Then as he gets lower and the atmosphere thickens terminal velocity will decrease, forcing a rapid deceleration with accompanying heat. Probably a really bulky suit, I guess, but a standard flight pressure suit wouldn't even begin to cover it.
Free fall at the speed of sound? What ever happened to terminal velocity?

terminal velocity increases with altitude

oh.
Break sonic barrier,
lol

It would "boil" and your organs would swell, but nothing would visually rupture out of very special conditions.
You would go swollen, then stiff, and after few days, freeze into a chunk of ice. That's all. No "HRRKKKK *poof*" nor "shhhhhsssss *I turned into icicle in two seconds*"

I don't think anyone even mentioned that. Till after you posted that.
Crazy shit people do these days.
Strangely enough, a few years ago I saw a episode of history's "The Universe" that featured a segment on being able to commercially skydive from the atmosphere in the near future.

The article does.
making the jump that could literally make his blood boil if something goes wrong.
Holy shit, the idea of jumping off of something and falling at terminal velocity for a long period of time while watching the Earth gradually creep closer is awesome as hell.
