Hello,
A while ago I replaced the OEM lights in my gauge cluster with LED ones. They are a lot brighter and I like them a lot. The only issue is that my high beam light is a VERY bright blue. My eyes are very sensitive to blue, and this is one of the few lights on my gauge cluster that doesn't dim. The plastic on the cluster itself has a blue tint to it.
I was trying to think of a way to darken just this one light some? Right now I just took and put a piece of electrical tape over the plastic on my gauge cluster. I can't see at all at night, it gets that bad.
I was thinking of buying the smallest sheet of window tint I could find, in.. 50%? That means it lets 50% of the light threw, correct? Maybe I'd want less light even? Then taking the front of my cluster apart and putting that over just that light.
Does that sound like it'd work?
Personally I'd take apart the cluster to either tint that area; not the clear cover. That or solder a softer light.
But a window tint on just the clear cover would be OK I suppose
What i meant was actually take off the clear cover and put the tint over the cluster itself. The same thing youre saying.
My car uses twist sockets that the lights slide into then twist into the cluster. I cant think of the names for them, but theres no soldering involved. Locally, i can only get white bulbs. I still end up with that bright blue due to the factory blue tint on the cluster.
Seems like what you and i say should work.
But does anyone know of something smaller than a roll of window tint i could use? I dont want to tint my windows, im trying to think of something else thatd work just as good
You can buy samples or small sheets of windows tint, why complicate yourself to find something else?
Everywhere I've looked locally so far only sells full sheets of window tint. I only need a piece the size of maybe a penny.
Looking on ebay, it looks like some places sell sample sheets of 5%, 20%, 35%, and 50% all together for $3. I'll probably just buy that
That's what I meant.
Buy clear plastic, cut to shape of cluster glass and cover that with tint to see how it looks. Repeat till you find the correct tint.
IF you go to a place that actually does tint work, they will have little swatches of different darknesses that they will just hand out. Go in, tell em your thinking about tinting your windows, ask them how much the whole car will be, then they start handing samples of about 4"x4" sheets to suggest options. Take them all home and say you have to talk to your wife about which one, and tell them you'll decide which one you want and be back. You will now have window tint to use for your gauge cluster.
There arent any local places that do tint work. There are about 25 miles away, but once you figure in my gas and such, its cheaper to just pay for the sample on ebay. Thanks for the suggestion though
A red or orange light should be softer on the eyes, so if you don't mind doing the job over again, you could try that

Its the cluster itself that has a blue tint film on it already, but its on the back of the plastic where i cant easily remove it. The lights are all pure white.
A red light or orange light wouldnt be so great for me anyways. Im partially colorblind and have issues with seeing red lights
