Jerusalem: Hundreds of thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews blocked the main entrance to Jerusalem in a mammoth prayer vigil to protest plans to draft thousands of their young men for military service.
http://www.smh.com.au/world/ultraorthodox-jews-rally-against-proposal-to-draft-them-into-israeli-military-20140303-hvfu9.html
I thought they would have been the ones most eager to protect their homeland
Ultra-Orthodox Israeli Jews are opposed to the state of Israel, it's kinda weird & complicated sort of
Long story short, they want other people to work, fight and die on their behalf while they spend all their time studying their religion. [editline]3rd March 2014[/editline] When they eventually become the majority as they're projected to, they'll realise how unsustainable that is.
Moral issue maybe?
Nope. Money. Just Money. Orthodox Schools are financed by the Government based on how many students they have. So having thousands of young men in the military means less money.
So I have to endure depression and suicidal thought every day for the rest of my service (2 years and 5 months) , "protecting" my crap country while they sit on their asses, reading their books? Fuck them, they need to get up and do something freaking productive with their lives instead of placing stupid as fuck religious rules on everyone and everything
I was not only annoyed by this on the whole objective point of how they should serve in the army and stuff, but also, because yesterday I went on my "release holiday" for two weeks after 3 years in the IDF, and those bastards blocked all of Jerusalem which is very close to my base and made me come home at 8:00 in the evening instead of like 2. Also, a cool picture I saw on facebook: The signs say "A protest of cry and prayer" and the soldiers say "Where were they when we cried?".
