NEW YORK -- The waterfalls of the Sept. 11 memorial at ground zero are showing signs of life. Engineers began testing one of the twin waterfalls on Tuesday, circulating hundreds of thousands of gallons of water into the north reflecting pool. The cascades are the largest manmade waterfalls in North America, and they empty into pools that mark spots where the World Trade Center towers once stood. The 176-foot-perimeter pools are the centerpieces of Michael Arad's "Reflecting Absence" memorial plaza, which will cover nearly half the 16-acre lower Manhattan site and will be surrounded by thousands of trees. The head of the foundation overseeing the memorial, Joe Daniels, said that even though Tuesday's tests were aimed at assessing the flow and circulation of the water, the aesthetics were "stunning." "It's really what the memorial is - the falling water and the sound," he said, adding it would "create the peaceful place that we hoped it would be." The tests, which began about 11 a.m. and continued throughout the day, focused largely on eight pumps that will circulate 52,000 gallons of water a minute. During the testing, more than 350,000 gallons of water streamed into the north pool. Chris Ward, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the trade center site, said in a statement that the testing was "an important sign of progress." "Sept. 11, 2011 is the only goal that matters, and for the next 306 days, we will continue to keep our heads down and locked in on delivering the sacred heart of the site," he added. Testing of the waterfalls of the south pool is expected to begin in the spring of 2011, almost 10 years after terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center and killed nearly 2,800 people on Sept. 11. In January, a 40-foot-wide waterfall mock-up was created and tested in a field in Brooklyn to get the right veil of water over a small dam with fingerlike structures that make the water flow in rivulets. When finished, the waterfalls and bronze panels bearing the names of the Sept. 11 victims will be backlit at night. Memorial builders expect to have the waterfalls fully installed by spring so that they can run by Sept. 11, 2011.
http://www.modbee.com/2010/11/09/1422011/testing-of-nyc-sept-11-memorial.html#ixzz14ruJc7Ff TLDR - Testing of the new 1WTC memorial fountain was started to test the pumps. The 2WTC memorial fountain will start testing spring of 2011. Interesting... Can't really make up a comment rate me dumb
It won't look nearly as cool as it does in those concept pictures when it's finished, since it's massively underfunded.
Are they still going through with the underground museum?
Spiffy looking fountain right there
It won't look nearly as cool as it does in those concept pictures when it's finished, since it's massively underfunded.
To compensate for the funds, instead of building it on the cheap, Silverstein and the PANYNJ are going to wait until they have the money, so while the project won't be finished till 2018ish (Completion of 2WTC ( Stop complaining, the original took just as long)), it'll be of a very high build quality.
Are they still going through with the underground museum?
Yep.
The new WTC's look pretty nice.
Last time I was there, it was a concrete pit with metal skeletons poking out. Where is it now?
Better not sell model airplanes nearby.
Looking pretty good. I hope it gets a decent memorial.
Last time I was there, it was a concrete pit with metal skeletons poking out. The building occupying 5 WTC's land is being deconstructed (The Deutsch Bank Building). The park, memorial, and museum will be finished in under a year.
A lot of people in america don't realize just how much progress is being done with the new WTCs. It's a shame.
Awesome. When I went there there was barely any construction done. I'm so glad they're resurrecting the area, just being there it was sort of hallowing to think of what happened right there.
Holy shit, what if someone falls in that thing? When it's done and open of course. I don't see any way for an unfortunate person to get out had they fallen in there. :ohdear:
Yep.
Wow. Ridiculous.
Are they still going through with the underground museum?
Yep. It's going to be awesome too.
im gonna laugh when the taliban try to crash a boat into it
im gonna laugh when the taliban try to crash a boat into it
Too much effort was put into that joke.
10 years. 1 Fountain. Good work.
lmao

what the christ
God damn. How many WTCs do we need?
I guess America is taking the redundancy path instead of the "let's not let terrorists fly planes into our buildings" path.
the joke's on the terrorists, i know for a fact that there will be no offices this time, we're ready
Osama in his cave is going... "DAMM THOES BITCH ASSES ARE BUILDIN WTC ALL OVAR AGAIN!"
It'll never be built. It's taken 9 years to build a goddamn fountain. It took less than 2 to rebuild the entire los angeles freeway system after the 1994 earthquake.
10 years. 1 Fountain. Good work.
10 years. Removal of 1 World Trade Center, 2 World Trade Center, 3 World Trade Center, 4 World Trade Center, 6 World Trade Center, World Trade Center Subway Station, Reconstruction of hold back walls, new museum foundation dug and poured, Museum skeleton constructed, frame of museum roof is constructed (remember the memorial fountains and park are actually the roof of a massive building), concrete poured for museum and park, hundreds of pieces of granite are mined, and engraved with the names of victims, massive pumps are installed, and hundreds of trees are planted. Getting all of that done while building the two largest man made fountains in north america, along with a huge museum, and a massive park in ten years ain't easy. Plus, you have some of the largest buildings on the planet being built right next door. Getting all of that done in ten years is not an easy feat. Also, if you want to get really technical, the legit reconstruction started in 2007. So for three years time, that's pretty good (Before that it was selecting a design, financing it, getting everything planed out, yatta yatta).
God damn. How many WTCs do we need?
Currently, six of them, 7 WTC was completed in 2007.
In before a plane.
dude look at that building the shit is almost invisible, you're gonna see alot more than planes crashing into that motherfucker right there
Last time I was there, it was a concrete pit with metal skeletons poking out. Where is it now?
Now it's a wet concrete pit.
