http://www.theverge.com/2014/8/29/6082199/msn-messenger-shutting-down-15-years-history
Microsoft’s MSN Messenger, or Windows Live Messenger as it’s now known, will be fully retired on October 31st. The software maker originally announced its plans to shift users over to Skype last year, but Microsoft kept the service running in China. After October 31st Chinese Messenger users will need to use Skype, bringing an end to 15 years of the service. MSN Messenger started off life in 1999 as a rival to AOL’s AIM service. Both companies battled over chat dominance, and Microsoft engineers reverse-engineered AOL's chat protocol to allow MSN Messenger to sign into AIM, a process that AOL wasn't happy with when Microsoft first released its instant messaging client. Over the years Microsoft added various features, including custom emoticons, the ability to play Minesweeper with friends, a nudge feature that would shake a friends chat window, and the super annoying winks option to send friends giant animated emoticons.
I still miss having stupid emoticons to spam my friends with.
Damn, Rest In Peace brother. I remember the time where we used to spam those big ass emoticons all over my cousins chat.
I thought MSN died when Windows Live was merged with Skype? I'll now have to forever my cherish my @msn.com email address.

I remember using MSN back in primary school to talk to all the girlies AND I GOT NO PUSSY WHATSOEVER GOOD RIDDANCE
MSN died years ago
MSN died years ago
Not in China.
heres a great story about msn vs aim in the early days. msn wanted its messegner to be able to talk to aim users and once aim found this out, the two companies went to war trying to prevent the two messengers from talking to each other years later one of the msn and one of the aim guys met each other and had a laugh about the whole thing https://nplusonemag.com/issue-19/essays/chat-wars/
I wish Facebook had never happened and we'd still be using MSN, I loved it. I miss the anonymity of just having one nickname, avatar and font to express yourself, as opposed to FB where you've got a whole public profile where people can see all of your friends, photos etc. It's too much.
Easily one of my earliest memories relating to the internet is having my older sister show me this when I was like 7 or 8 and it was brand new. Every sound from MSN is like a direct mainline of nostalgia.
Anonymity when talking to friends?
I don't like the direction social networking is going, sharing more and more information, which becomes publicly available to everyone, I don't trust it. I liked MSN's simplicity.
thread music
Nothing like a boring Saturday afternoon when all of a sudden you hear that shit being spammed 50 times because your mate desperately wants to know what you're doing and if you want to webcam so he can show you something of great unimportance in his room
I saw my first titties (discounting actual porn) on MSN. Rest in peace ;_;7
Good-bye my cybering days.

honestly realtalk MSN was the shit in its prime and I was kinda sad to hear MS shutting it down in favour of Skype, I definitely think they could of salvaged more from MSN and put it in Skype like the photo sharing gallery was amazing to share images quickly and I loved the handy voice recorder
Remember fucking about with Smarterchild?
If you guys want something similar to MSN, there's an open source protocol called XMPP/Jabber. It's open; so everyone can run their own "relay", and have their own clients; there are also a ton of chat clients that support it. It also acts like email in a lot of ways, the syntax is the same: user@website.domain and people from website-a.domain can message people at website-b.domain, it's a little rare to seen used for non-business or internal networks: but there are open nodes that you can create accounts on. Anyway, thought I'd weigh in since "public" adoption of XMPP is low, and I think it's the next step in IM protocols. /endrant

They never explained at school.
All I remember about MSN chat is the crazy colours from custom backgrounds in the chat and a million and one different emotions to spam with every sentence
those guys that tied every letter to a 250kb+ gif and the fact that you were with a 56k yeah that's how i came to know about pain
