Well it was nice while it lasted. Just one day after DxOMark said the Nexus 6P's camera was second only to the Galaxy S6 Edge, it has declared a new phone at the top. The title now goes to the Sony Xperia Z5.
The Xperia Z5 is set to hit the market soon with a 5.2 inch 1080p display, a Snapdragon 810 chip, 3GB of RAM, and Android 5.1. But what is most relevant here is that 23MP camera on the back, which can capture 5520 by 4120 images. Sony is well known for its camera technology, and it looks like the Xperia Z5 doesn't disappoint.
The phone has achieved 88 out of 100 in the photo category and 86 for video, giving it an overall score of 87. This puts it above the Nexus 6P's total of 84. DxOMark says the phone excels with impressive auto focus in all conditions, calling this feature in particular the best it has tested in a phone to date. it also praises the white balance and color rendering, along with the detail preservation in both good and low light. The image stabilization is also apparently far ahead of the competition. You can check out the review to see the results yourself.
Hmmm.
Well this has put the Xperia on my radar.
sounds like a bribe, can't be sure until it comes out and strongly ties to user reviews.
that doesn't sound even remotely like a bribe. practically all phone camera sensors are made by sony, and the z series have always had excellent cameras anyways.

that said, the one review i've seen did typically give a slight edge to the s6. still, that was just some guy giving his opinion

The Xperia Z series has typically done well with DxOMark too, as evident by the fact that the Top 15 Smartphone camera list on the right side of the page contains the almost every Xperia Z series phone, excluding the original Z and Z Ultra.
Also for anyone curious about how the video stabilization fares,

I'm curious how the new iPhones will fare
Man I've always wanted to have a Xperia Z phone but it never comes to verizon or well after I've chosen my phone. Sony knows how to make a good camera so it doesn't surprise me that this phone ranks so high

Shit I always thought my Z3 had great video quality but watching this makes it look so blurry.
They're also waterproof, have metal frames and have really long battery times.
Why are they not more popular? I don't really understand what makes people want the Samsung phones of the Sony ones.

the Z3 Compacts camera is fucking terrible. I dont understand why because, as you say, Sony make most of the camera sensors...

I agree, best phone I've ever owned, once got 5 days out of the battery and not had any faults. I guess they don't get much marketing but they're way underestimated.

Cuz samsung is hyped as fuck and has loads of marketing.
I've had an M2 since 2014 and even though its the bane of midrange averageness (like, the most midrange thing ever) its still pretty good. Works great, looks GREAT, has great battety life... Only the camera is meh, and the front camera is awful.
Kinda wish I had a z5c now... The z3c is great and all, but... Apparently, the z5c puts it to shame
Pretty happy with my Z3, didn't even know that the Z4 was released, let alone the Z5 was in development.
I'm on the Z1... thought it was still on Z2. Where the hell did the rest come from? Are they wheeling these out every month? :v:
EDIT: Oh, 4 was a tablet.
Damn, definitely picking this up then! My Z2 has served me well.

How worse in comparison to the Z3?
DxOmark is garbage

really well. not the best sensor (although it is still fantastic), but by far the best ISP and software combination make it the best phone camera. S6 comes second, but it's pretty close if anything if you disable all the saturation stuff

I remember that the Z2 had a troubled US launch, not sure about the others, but generally they are not well known there. I guess Sony is failing to make their phones stand out, and carriers are not keen on pushing them. Shame really, they deserve much better.

Tell us about your superior method of measuring the quality of sensors and rating them
Tell us about your superior method of measuring the quality of sensors and rating them
irrelevant, i don't make sensor rating algorithms because that is not my job. but DxOmark is flawed, and evidently biased for many different kinds of sensors. it doesn't take software or ISP in to account anywhere near as much as it should.
is it good for raw sensor data? usually. does that apply to anybody that takes photos with a mobile phone or camera? no
a better sensor doesn't make a better camera. i think most photographers should already know that.
Can't wait for them all to be filling up landfills in the next couple months when something marginally better comes out.
Does anybody have problems with the newer Xperia Z series? I've owned two Z1's and both have touchscreen problems where the calibration will be whacked out for a short period of time before returning to normal. Apart from that I love the phone and have debated getting a newer one, had no idea a Z5 was announced.

I hear the z3 series are solid.

They break relatively easily due to the (GORGEOUS) minimalist glass design. Only reason to not own a Z3 over any other past Gen phone IMO.
[editline]3rd October 2015[/editline]
You also will not be able to repair them in the US without having to ship it somewhere because nobody repairs them, and this means you will have to own a secondary backup phone.

Tldr get a case, be happy.
Pretty happy with my Z3, didn't even know that the Z4 was released, let alone the Z5 was in development.
The Z4 was only really a "thing" in Japan, everywhere else it was marketed as the Z3+.

Yeah, and even then, the Z3 has almost no PR in the states, and the few carriers that stocked it (esp on-site) stopped selling them early.
iPhones get a lot of organic PR in the way that every other human in middle-upper class areas owns one, and Galaxies get insane PR from the people that own iPhones because those people think Galaxies are the only Androids.
Nobody recognized what my phone was, and obviously even less people bought it.

They're solidly built, as in they have a really heavy/rigid feel to them which gives this sort of premium feel.
But, yes, plastic phones will survive more than a glass/metal one. Plastic is lighter, and can bend more than glass.
I have a case for my Z1, and it remains spotless to this day.

Well, where I live it's like that with everything within electronics so w/e :v:
Yeah, but the Z3 is specially fragile in that it doesn't have gorilla glass and the edges are all glass except for the narrow band of metal around it that will not absorb many impacts. So when you place it down, glass is always touching something.
But SO "premium" feeling. I legit couldn't stop groping mine the first 2 or 3 weeks.
