Rat meat sold as lamb in Shanghai, police say If you have ordered lamb or mutton for hotpot in Shanghai over the last four years, you might have been served rat, fox or mink, the Ministry of Public Security said on Thursday. "Since 2009, the suspect, surnamed Wei, has bought foxes, minks, rats and other uninspected meat products in Shandong," the ministry said in a press release on its website. "After adding gelatine, carmine, nitrate and other substances, he sold the meat as fake lamb rolls [for hot pot] at farmers' markets in Jiangsu and Shanghai." Wei's organisation was raided in Jiangsu and Shanghai in February, which led to the arrest of 63 suspects and the seizure of 10 tons of meat and additives. Police estimates that Wei's sales over the last four years have reached a value of 10 million yuan (HK$12.6 million). In March, police in Baotou, a city in the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region, stopped a company that since 2010 has been producing beef jerky from duck meat and selling it in 15 Chinese provinces. Almost 15 tons of the fake jerky were confiscated. These are two of 10 stomachs-wrenching cases the ministry listed as exemplary of a crackdown on food product fraud - meat of diseased animals, steroid-manipulated meat and sewer oil - that started two weeks before Chinese New Year, on January 25. Over the last three months, authorities throughout China have seized some 20,000 tons in counterfeit meat and arrested 3,576 suspects in the operation, dealing "a heavy blow to the arrogance of criminals", the ministry said. The campaign comes amid a growing shortage in agricultural products and a general sense of anxiety over food security. The task of providing an adequate supply of safe food would be "very tough", Agriculture Minister Han Changfu said at a meeting in December. In 2010, some 300,000 children got sick after consuming melamine-tainted milk products. Studies last year showed excessive amounts of heavy metals in rice from several regions. In 2005, a fake chicken egg producer's website boasted producing 1,500 eggs a day out of paraffin wax and algae.
Source Rat shishkebab. Om nom nom.
I dunno why they mentioned the fake chicken eggs, at least that guys honest about it. "Aye, so, my eggs are made out of a flammable substance and pond scum, tastes great though!"
My Great-Grandad went to China with the Royal Navy (long time before I was even born). He had a particularly good meal at a restaurant and called the waiter over to get the name of the dish. The waiter replied "Him puss-puss." There seems to be a rather pragmatic culinary culture in the East.
Another common issue we have in Asia. Making meat from rubberband and powder? Noodles from tires? No problem. Yes, that's how fucked up we're.
Immediately thought of this.
I imagine the press would never forget this incident if it happened in Britain considering the reaction to the horse meat scandal.
China always wants to be the best at everything. Even at meat substitutes.
Valve must have gotten the inspiration for their cake mix from Shanghai.
I went to a Chinese restaurant once and asked for seaweed and they gave me crispy cabbage
I dont get the problem its edible at the end of the day.
This is why I'm terrified of asian restaurants
I dont get the problem its edible at the end of the day.
Firstly, it's fraud, what if you bought a steak, expecting beef, and it was made of reformed and dyed pork? You'd be pissed, secondly, rats carry diseases, lots of diseases, and are not easily edible without getting sick.

They're good for nothin' freeloaders, only starting work at 8 oclock and crapping out all the time; infact, if you drive 20 minutes outside of a town they're not even there! AM I EXPECTED TO USE THE LIGHTS ON MY CAR?!
HAS CANCER GIVEN YOUR DAUGHTERS CANCER?
shocking. anyhow this is really a widespread problem in asia. food sanitation is really lackluster in basically the entire continent with very specific exceptions.
COULD THE BBC BURGLE PENSIONERS?
Reading the abbreviation for the British Broadcasting Corporation has always amused me greatly ever since I realized it's the same abbreviation commonly used in porn for Big Black Cock
Wait, what's that about horse meat? What about it?
Wait, what's that about horse meat? What about it?
To cut a long story short, in the UK several meat distributors sent on meat which was 'contaminated' with horse meat into the outside world, in the UK and areas this is a very big thing; because horse isn't a regular menu item so everyone lost their fucking shit Eventually it was traced back and a lot more items of food started getting tested to check if they are actually selling the product they advertise; As of my memory right now - Don't go to Tesco, Don't go to ASDA, Don't go to Iceland, dont eat prison food if you're on a halal diet. Although, birds eye were selling things marketed as cod which was of 'A lower quality fish, and that kinda' makes me worried. Fyi - Horse is A-OK to eat, ask Europe they'll tell you. I digress, it was the fact that they were advertising it as something else and selling it as something else and it was subpar. Also, The sun(?) reported some guy went to hospital for eating a microwave lasanga with horse meat and almost died or something, what the fuck man hahaha
Ah, I see. It was false advertising. I was confused because I eat horse meat on regular basis and it's as right as rain.
