It's no secret that some people put on weight faster than others. But for the first time, scientists have identified a gene that is responsible for metabolism, or the rate at which a person's body burns calories. And for some people who have been obese since they were children, that particular gene is mutated and unable to carry out its normal functions.
Researchers at the University of Cambridge, led by Dr. Sadaf Farooqi, Ph.D., M.D., have determined that the KSR2 gene regulates metabolism, appetite and the way the body processes energy, such as glucose and fat. But mutations in the KSR2 gene mean that cells can't properly process glucose and fatty acids, which can lead to insulin resistance, obesity and a slower metabolism.
"It's been thought for some time that there's likely genetic differences in how people burn calories," said Farooqi in a phone interview with The Huffington Post. "There hasn't really been any proof until now that a gene or a set of genes can influence a person's metabolic rate."
Still doesn't justify the Fat Liberation Movement.
The Fat Liberation Movement will always elude me
I mean it's not a goddamn lifestyle choice, it's a sign of being unhealthy and at serious risk of illness
But on topic, would love to see more research on this front
Thank God I have a high metabolism.
Yesterday I ate Taco Bell, cake, and some chicken from Safeway.

you lucky bastard
Not an excuse
Oh God, don't show Tumblr this.
The last thing I need is more 'Thin Privilege' crap.
I'm the same exact way right now.
I can eat literally anything I want and gain next to nothing. The little weight I do gain burns off like that *snap fingers*.
Working on changing my eating habits though; not going to make the mistake of assuming this will last forever (which is too bad, I wouldn't mind if it did).
I might have to change as well. It's weird, because usually when I eat a big meal (like dinner) I usually feel full for an hour, then I come back for something else. But when I eat (maybe 5 tootsie rolls), or starbursts after not eating anything else prior; I feel full as if I ate an entire buffet.
you lucky bastard
It does have some downsides tho.
I have a hard time finding pants that fit me, due to being tall and thin.
i thought this was already known.

that metabolism isn't helping you as much as you think it is. it's not some kind of magic gateway to infinite junk food eating, you probably just don't eat much otherwise, at least, not on a regular basis.

My heart bleeds.
you'd need to have superhuman metabolism for it to make any noticeable effect on it's own on how thin you are. that's not because of it, you just need to start eating more regularly, more healthily

nah, there are people(very few through) who can eat ridiculous ammounts of food and not gain weight.
I like to be slightly fat. Seriously.
People saying they have high/low metabolism are usually just overestimating/underestimating how much calories they're truly taking in. I know way too much people telling me they eat shitload and can't gain weight but at the end of the day, they only clocked in at 1500 calories.

indeed. eating shitloads does not directly correlate to intaking shitloads of calories, by rule of thumb. it depends what you're eating, and how regularly.

junk food can be bad for you, but that doesn't mean it has a lot of calories or is very fatty.

I know 2 or maybe 3 people who just can't gain weight and they eat a lot like 2-3 times what i eat daily.
One of them is a goddamn skeleton with some foreskin. 0% fat
So, the file KSR2 is what manages our metabolisms, eh? Well, if it can be corrupted, it can be fixed, or even enhanced. Once we have the appropriate reprogramming retrovirus, we could take a big step towards fixing metabolic deficiencies and obesity predispositions.
And whilst we're at it, we need to find the file responsible for prioritizing protein metabolising over fat metabolising, and rejigger it to metabolise body fat before muscle mass. We wear the hides and furs of beasts to keep warm, and our houses are awash with heat, so we probably don't need that particular program anymore, and would benefit more from retaining muscle mass more than the body fat.
Anyone know which file that one is?

Link pic of yourself then.
Yes I always knew I wasn't responsible for my own weight now science proofs it

Ask them to count how many calories they're taking in, seriously, unless they don't follow the rules of thermodynamics or they're some absolute genetic freaks of nature, odds are they're just grossly miscounting. Back when I was a fat fuck I thought the same, go to my skinny friend's house, guy would eat shitload but turns out that over the course of the day I was simply eating more calories than he was even if he was binge eating when I was there.
You also have to take in activity level, won't change lots but you might be able to afford a few hundred calories more if you're active.

Or I don't know- if a person has a high metabolic rate is it likely to slow down as they age?
I'll just drop the generic reminder that high metabolism does not mean healthy. Bad eating habits still cause harm inside, fat can still encroach on your organs whilst not being visible externally. Indulging yourself every now and then is great (hell, I had a whole pizza as a treat today) but you've gotta keep a balance. I'm hardly one to talk though, I have a passable diet, but no exercise past powerwalking a few miles a day. I'm 61kg at 172cm, so I suppose I'm hardly a hambeast, though.
You also have to take in activity level, won't change lots but you might be able to afford a few hundred calories more if you're active.
The human body is amazing, it is incredibly energy efficient when it comes to motion - you've got to do a lot of exercise to burn off a relatively small amount of energy, yet the body itself at rest rate manages to burn up a huge amount of energy.
With modern diets, it'd be nice if our body was slightly less efficient!
I don't know why everyone is so envious of people with high metabolism. Lower metabolic rates means longer life span.

I used to think I had a "fast metabolism" too when I was a lot younger. Now I drink loads of protein shakes and gym everyday and am a buff machine. You're just not eating as much; some people tend to have shitty appetites (especially when you never eat) and it takes conditioning to restore it to baseline.
Read this before you think you can safely eat crap food and your body will just do all the work for you:

I had a slow metabolism. Weighed almost 260 in 12th grade. I was pretty fit for it though, used to lift weights all the time, not claiming anywhere near all of it was muscle or something, but I carried it well. Down to about 225 now, and it fits well on my frame.
Fast metabolisms trick people into thinking they're healthy.
Differences in metabolism between people, while existant, are tiny when compared to differences in appetites
The latter is the real barrier for weight loss
Fast metabolisms trick people into thinking they're healthy.
This.
I may be thin and think I can eat a lot of food without repercussion, but I've been sick as a dog for a week now because I've been eating too much crap.
You heard it here first folks, fat people are mutants.
My metabolism has kept me at 145 pounds for 2 years now. With my current eating habits, I don't want to know what I would be if it was the other way around.
