I wish they'd shown more of the actual flying formations rather than trying to make it dramatic by repeatedly cutting to the orchestra, crowd, and the people doing nothing on the computers
What happened in the last 10 years or so that made quadcopters/drones so much more popular? Is it just a fad or was some key technology missing to make them successful previously?

Once capacity increased to the point they can fly around for a practical length of time everyone found the mobility of the platform really useful, and they're cheaper than alternatives like renting a helicopter.
Yeah, its a few things. Miniaturization and simplification of the technology meant smaller, easier to operate models could be picked up. Costs came down meaning you didn't have to be willing to drop tremendous money to be able to fly simple ones. Also greater media presence helped, more people seeing them and thinking they're great gifts. [editline]16th January 2016[/editline] For $50 to $60 you can go down to a Walmart or Target and pick up a cheap, small, basic quad-rotor. I eagerly await the day that I can have a drone that follows me around for some practical purpose.
That Intel part was quite funny, didn't see it coming, guess they sponsored it.

This is how we communicate with the aliens from Close Encounters.
