PALO ALTO, Calif. — Computers have entered the age when they are able to learn from their own mistakes, a development that is about to turn the digital world on its head. The first commercial version of the new kind of computer chip is scheduled to be released in 2014. Not only can it automate tasks that now require painstaking programming — for example, moving a robot’s arm smoothly and efficiently — but it can also sidestep and even tolerate errors, potentially making the term “computer crash” obsolete.
The new computing approach, already in use by some large technology companies, is based on the biological nervous system, specifically on how neurons react to stimuli and connect with other neurons to interpret information. It allows computers to absorb new information while carrying out a task, and adjust what they do based on the changing signals.
In coming years, the approach will make possible a new generation of artificial intelligence systems that will perform some functions that humans do with ease: see, speak, listen, navigate, manipulate and control. That can hold enormous consequences for tasks like facial and speech recognition, navigation and planning, which are still in elementary stages and rely heavily on human programming.
Designers say the computing style can clear the way for robots that can safely walk and drive in the physical world, though a thinking or conscious computer, a staple of science fiction, is still far off on the digital horizon.

I kinda had a thought, automated cars have pretty good track records during their tests (iirc the only damage a automated car took was when it was parked and someone hit it) so imagine that, plus second-gen of this tech
it's entirely possible that car could drive better than a human 100% of the time barring malfuctions
shit, automated cars today make my driving look bad

Yes but Rush makes a better companion, specially with that coil he's got there. Thing really helps with getting to the top shelf.
Now we are beginning to reach a point where mankind must question its ethics of is artificial life, something we should consider as sentient and has some sort of inherited rights as an individual.
Course the intelligence is still well within infancy, but it'll come sooner than we think.

No logical reason to unless someone is naive enough to ever think it'd have the chance of ~rising up~ and ~turning the other cheek~.

i dont trust tech over my own experience.

No offence to you but many of my friends are arrogant and stupid drivers. They think they are better than others, undertaking, illegal overtaking, speeding, road rage. They would say a similar thing.
I can imagine many people would say a similar thing.
I can also imagine human errors and crashes being blamed on the robots. People fearing lack of control or generaly not trusting the tech would cause them to dislike it can potentially support the people causing the crashes.

What? Thats a street view car, the one with the cameras on, nothing to do with google's self driving cars.

There's loads of stupid people on the roads but no matter how stupid they are they can still react to things such as children on the road or the sudden change in driving conditions.
Unless they're pouring enough dosh into the things to make them be able to process information faster than most humans, and use it to make a safe decision. They're good for stuff duch as safe parts of highways but i'm sure you're better at legally driving than it.
The AI should also be taken seriously. While this is one of the small achievements for humankind and the AI is still at its baby steps, its intelligence should be limited at some point before it sees mankind as a threat to its 'existence'
This will be the beginning of the end.

That looks fucking terrifying and will probably be employed by mecha-obama in 2035 to kill dissidents in their sleep. No thanks.
Neural Networks is not a new concept, this article is a bit hyped but I will wait and see what this processor can add to this. For those who are interested in the subject and really want hands on this type of thing, go take a look at Machine Learning from Andew Ng in Stanford, it's a really great course.
It's an annual thing to blow non programmers minds with "NEURAL NETWORKS".
Im very interested in machine learning. To the point where I cant sleep trying to think of how humans think.
Anyway when real AI happens it wont be individuals, it will have a hive mind, so ethics issues will be different. Imagine one sentient being with many bodies, shit will be crazy.

We're not talking about some Terminator bullshit here, we're talking about if the concept sentience should be reevaluated.
When it gets to a point to where artificial intelligence is nearly indiscernible with a person, should we just say that all our neurons are just glorified circuits?
EDIT
Maybe this is something that should be saved for Mass Debate
AI will never be indiscernible from humans. The thing is, humans, and pretty much all living things, have the potential for error, to unintentionally deviate from our planned course of action. It is from that potential that we can truly learn and innovate. Machines can only process information and spit out a pre-programmed response. While this new invention is interesting, the ability to make mistakes is the key to true sentience.
sounds a little scary that computers can learn from mistakes, therefore maximizing their efficiency. sure that nothing will go wrong though, not yet at least

A sufficiently advanced AI wouldn't need to learn from mistakes, it could just simulate them.
That's a hell of a long way off though.
” The Google Prius must have been driving pretty quickly to cause that kind of chain reaction. That sounds to us like automated driving, which navigates traffic obstacles much more quickly than a human would. What do you think? Was the car at fault or the driver?
the article provides literally no evidence that the car was on autopilot and just spouts baseless conjecture
sorry

if it realizes researchers are placing limits on it out of fear it'll realize they operate out of self interest and are therefore potentially a threat.
