An escalator caught on fire at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport Tuesday morning,, injuring two firefighters who were trying to put it out.
Local television station WCRB reports that the fire, which broke out around 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, started in the motor of an escalator that led from an airport train to Concourse T.
"Passengers were briefly rerouted to other concourses because of heavy smoke," said Janet Ward, a spokeswoman for the Atlanta Fire Department, reports Reuters. "The fire was quickly extinguished."
A spokesperson for the airport said that the fire did not cause any major flight delays.
Good thing the situation didn't escalate any further. It could have really ascended into a big problem for the airport.
How did it catch fire if they were already trying to put the fire out.
Its like... it was not on fire, but it was.

The jokes are a bit up and down over here.
Looks like it wasn't a stairway to heaven after all.
It keeps happening
As if mangling your legs wasnt enough of a risk, now you have to worry about catching on fire.
Someone put a flammable Slinky on that escalator and all hell broke loose.

It was probably just a few embers at first, but it escalated quickly.
I'm curious as how two firefighters got hurt trying to put it out
It keeps happening
Theres an escalator at the MOA that eats shoes. Like, it will literally rip your shoes off
I'm curious as how two firefighters got hurt trying to put it out
Just a guess, but I'd say the fire is a pretty likely culprit.
I read Escalade instead of escalator, thought some random SUV caught fire and made news.

Let's hope that things don't descend into chaos.
[sp]who said escalators have to go up?[/sp]
What worries me about escalators is people use trollies on them but don't actually hold them so if the magnets decide to stop working everyone will be crushed by each others shopping and or luggage.
I'm curious as how two firefighters got hurt trying to put it out
waow it's almost like
it's almost like being a fire fighter is a dangerous job
Suddenly pedestrian traffic jams as people never take the stairs.
Suddenly pedestrian traffic jams as people never take the stairs.
seeing as i am a regular at atlanta you probably dont want to use the stairs with luggage and carryons
i mean obviously the perspective is a bit off in this but

it's like 5 stories tall at least
That scene must have got some funny stairs.
But seriously, wow. I wasn't aware escalator motors could catch fire, was the motor under heavy load or something?
