Just imagine if all works became part of the public domain after a while (after the company has made a profit on them)
Think how limitless all mobiles phones, for example, could be if the ridiculous extended patents were removed

If I recall, I thought this was seventy years after copyright filing.

it was 30 years, then as that approached, politicans were bribed to extend it, and ever since then every time stuff has been about to expire, its been extended again. Its essentially infinite at this point if they keep bribing lawmakers.
At the current moment, American copyright is the lifetime of the creator plus 100 years, I believe.
It's plainly obvious that it's ridiculous.

Even 30 years is bullshit. The lower the time that it is protected, the faster our progress. Companies will push to make things actually BETTER as long as they still profit from them.
It still should be atleast a decade, maybe 2.
