Well, Apple's picked up a number of mapmakers and is now reportedly getting ready to unveil a Google map competitor for iOS. 9to5Mac is reporting that the mapping solution will be in-place for the next major version of the mobile operating system, combining technologies gathered with the acquisition of Placebase, C3 Technologies and Poly9. The star of the show is said to be the 3D mode with graphics nabbed from C3. All Things D has "independently confirmed" the forthcoming app reinvention, with sources adding, (hopefully a bit hyperbolically) that it will "blow your head off." According to rumors, we'll be finding out a lot more come WWDC next month.
No thanks.
map quest
Apple taking on Google, This is totally new
I bet its shiny.
I bet it'll do the exact same thing, except it'll cost money.
The map probably will have lens flare
I bet it'll do the exact same thing, except it'll cost money.
It'll do the exact same thing, but with ~social features~. And it'll cost money.
The app will stop responding if you turn your car the wrong way.
Maybe they can beat gmaps but nothing beats bing maps, sorry
It'll do the exact same thing, but with ~social features~. And it'll cost money.
It can't even get away with social features, since google already has Latitude. Besides who the fuck is gonna stop using google maps? it's so hilariously deeply ingrained in peoples minds that they're not gonna use apple maps, cause google maps are easy as fuck to access and use and there is no reason to change.
Maybe they can beat gmaps but nothing beats bing maps, sorry
I'm not sure if this is sarcasm or not but bing maps is actually optimized pretty well and has a nice interface and has birds eye view that google doesn't have
It'll do the exact same thing, but with ~social features~. And it'll cost money.
It just said it'll be integrated into the next iOS.
I'm not sure if this is sarcasm or not but bing maps is actually optimized pretty well and has a nice interface and has birds eye view that google doesn't have
Birds eye view? what do you mean, a top down view while you are actually navigating instead of behind you?
Good, Google maps is nice but its really bare bones and frankly the android version is better. From those who have not seen it, this is what C3's map engine looks like: Honestly I welcome this change and can't wait to see this out of prototype stage.
Birds eye view? what do you mean, a top down view while you are actually navigating instead of behind you?
No, it's a slightly angled high-definition view of populated areas taken from lower-flying airplanes instead of satellite imagery
No, it's a slightly angled high-definition view of populated areas taken from lower-flying airplanes instead of satellite imagery
Go over Houston in gmaps. It definitely has birds eye. It's only in certain cities right now.
Importing this map into a game so you could actually explore the entire planet would be the best thing ever.
I've always dreamed of that.
I'm not sure if this is sarcasm or not but bing maps is actually optimized pretty well and has a nice interface and has birds eye view that google doesn't have
It loads much faster than GMaps did without WebGL. I don't know which one is faster now. The interface is horrible though. THERE ARE TWO SEARCH BARS WITH DIFFERENT FUNCTIONALITY! And GMaps had the birds eye view too, it got it much later though. [editline]11th May 2012[/editline] We're talking about the web versions right? Because I have no idea what the iOS versions are like.

In WebGL even?
Obviously the phone version, robber
I remember this, didn't nokia do something similiar? In WebGL even?
http://maps.nokia.com/ Yes but it you look down on the bottom left you will see it was done in conjunction with C3 Technologies. Go figure :v:
Importing this map into a game so you could actually explore the entire planet would be the best thing ever.
Flight Simulator, with HQ land mods, is already like that.
Funny how Google is doing the same thing MS has been doing , and like MS before, Google is now losing friends. Sorta like how Facebook stopped using Google stuff, and now Apple is anti-Google for obvious reasons.
I bet it'll do the exact same thing, except it'll cost money.
Apple do not have a single app that costs a subscription.
Apple wouldn't charge for it. They'll use it to market their devices. There's no reason to discredit it now just because it's being made by Apple. Especially with the technology firms they purchased and Apple's large capital stockpile, this could turn out to be something completely new and useful.
Ahaha
Apple do not have a single app that costs a subscription.
Well there's spotify, unless you mean like if Apple were to charge a sub themselves.
I think it's a good idea, the reality is, rich hipster people in dense populations will buy and look at this shit, "hey it's my house!" (Along with a few million other people in nyc, or some capital of some state/province/country who have access to technology.) I bet it'll be a program in iOS that you have to pay for like $60. But im sure Apple is rich enough and could do it for free. And that's how they can be as good as google, google maps is free, so should this.
unless you mean like if Apple were to charge a sub themselves.
Yeah that. Apple literally have too much money, they don't know what to do with it. They have no reason to charge for apps.
