Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) asked Director of National Intelligence James Clapper a rather straightforward question: "Does the NSA collect any type of data at all on millions or hundreds of millions of Americans?" The DNI responded, "No, sir." Revelations of NSA activities in June made it pretty obvious that Clapper's response wasn't true. In fact, Wyden, who told Clapper in advance that the question was coming, knew that the response wasn't accurate, and gave the DNI an opportunity to clarify his answer after the hearing. Clapper declined.

"I have thought long and hard to re-create what went through my mind at the time," Clapper said in the previously undisclosed letter. "My response was clearly erroneous -- for which I apologize."
If the DNI is able to lie with a straight face to a Congressional oversight hearing and only "apologies" after it was confirmed he was lying, it makes you wonder what else the US government is bullshitting on. This highlights the necessity of whistleblowers like Snowden, the USG can hardly be trusted.
It's a shame they can just lie to congress with no repercussions.
Congress will probably find it somewhere in their hearts to forgive them with no consequences.

"Technically, it's millions of Americans and foreign citizens. You should have been more specific."
Why would you get no punishment for lying to congress? That's ridiculous. I would have thought you'd get a harsher punishment because of how serious it is.
I imagine if Snowden came along and said, "Yeah sorry I kinda leaked some bad stuff." He'd still go 'missing' on a transfer somewhere in US Custody. But this? A government section devoted to spying on regular people, and tracking what they do, if it's anything note worthy? Then they just say, "No we didn't get any documents on anyone!" then immediately say, "Uh yeah sorry, I forgot we did." and immediately have eyes looking away from it. Ridonkulos.

The NSA in particular has gone completely rouge and exists with essentially no oversight or accountability at all.

Even if they tell me the sky is blue, or if they ordered a pepperoni and anchove pizza. They lie and bullshit about so much that it's best to assume all of it is lies and bullshit.
Makes me wonder what else they lie about in our 'infallible' justice system
