The Abbott government is set to scrap the ABC’s Australia Network international broadcasting service in next Tuesday’s budget.
Cabinet approved the decision in a meeting on Wednesday, according to a report in The West Australian. The ABC has a 10-year, $223 million contract to run the network, which broadcasts to 44 countries in the Asia Pacific.
The ABC, which is finalising new partnership deals with Chinese and Indonesian broadcasters, has been lobbying publicly and privately for the government to continue to fund the service.
The ABC is required under its charter to transmit news and other programs to overseas countries to encourage awareness of Australia and enable Australians living overseas to stay abreast of national affairs.
Although some ministers are understood to believe the Australia Network could be replaced by online streaming of ABC News 24, this would be difficult in practice.
And here is another part, there is still more on the site so I would suggest reading it
Under content distribution deals, ABC news bulletins include international stories from broadcasters such as the BBC and al-Jazeera. In many cases, the ABC is only allowed to use this footage in Australia. This is why a “geo-block” currently applies to ABC News 24’s online stream.
“The cost of the ABC obtaining full international distribution rights for any non-ABC content would be prohibitive and not a good investment in the funds we're granted to provide a news service to Australia,” ABC head of continuous news Gaven Morris said in 2010. “In some cases, international rights are not available at any cost.”
Thanks, I updated the source link with Bradyns's link and even added a picture to the op.

YEAH ADVERTS!
Don't you fucking dare Abbott, what am I without my Tuesday fix of Good Game?
While I recognize this is dumb shit, specifically

What's hard in practice about online streaming a news TV station?
ABC is the only reason I would turn my tv on.
Pretty sensationalist title, they're cutting funding for the broadcast of Australian news in asia/oceania.
Still not that great as it cuts us off a bit from the rest of the world but not nearly as bad as the title makes it sound.
The ABC is not being axed.

It's the backbone news station for regional Australia.
Not all of regional and remote Australia has access to the internet, and those that do have to pay out the ass for data packages that would restrict streaming.
It's an absolutely abysmal decision if it gets handed down.

Pretty sure it says in the rest of the article. There are different licensing laws/procedures involved with streaming content from other sources (e.g. Al Jazeera or BBC) to other countries so streaming the same content wouldn't be an option as it would cost too much to license.
This only effects people who live in South-East Asia, the article is only talking about the ABC's international news channel that they broadcast to other countries. To be honest, there probably isn't a massive viewership to begin with.
How about he fuck off with his new jets if he wants to cut costs.

It's a clever scumbag move at the very least, gut-punching the ABC for not being biased towards Tony Abbot in a way that doesn't directly affect the voting population and also attracts less attention.
Don't you fucking dare Abbott, what am I without my Tuesday fix of Good Game?
The article does not refer to cuts to domestic broadcasting. This is cuts to broadcasting of our domestic programs in 40 or so other countries in the region.
Rest assured, cuts to such a lame show more than likely won't be made.
Don't you fucking dare Abbott, what am I without my Tuesday fix of Good Game?
if you actually watch good game, maybe it's for the best
Can't we just deport Abbott back to England?

Well now I feel horrible
Harper tried the same shit with CBC when it did articles on Trudeau.
[editline]10th May 2014[/editline]
Cept he went all out and cut funding inside canada too.
Bit sensationalist, the ABC is not being axed
the australia network is a tv network used overseas for australians but most of them get australian news online off the website and off streaming now so its considered to be redundant
it's a bit bad but nothing particularly scary compared to other recommendations the other government has made such as changing our university system to match the american university system lol
This international deal was actually gaining major traction in Asia and the Pacific, since most of their television is shit and they want more Australian broadcasting. Abbott is well and truly fucking the country over at this point for giggles.
I didn't mean to make the title sensationalist, I guess I read the article wrong, my bad everyone.
I assume that is why I am getting rated dumb.
Good Game: Pocket edition also got Axed because of "ABC2's new program reform" and stated it wasn't because of the budget
Bunch of bullshit
Abbott can get fucked

Harper and Abbot seem like the same person.
Cuts to public broadcasting and jets, why do right wingers like planes so damn much
Any of you colonials want a ticket back to the motherland?
[editline]10th May 2014[/editline]
You can escape Abbot.
You're all retards, sensationalist as fuck. The ABC, and most shows can be internationally can be accessed via internet. This is just the broadcasting, at least he isn't cutting something important.

Australia network is pretty important for expanding our content to the Asian-Pacific area, while it was nothing compared to the BBC world service it was still something
(I still think BBC should have some Australian content on the American and Canadian channel but that's just me)
