Sperm whales were stranded and washed up on the shores of Yancheng, Jiangsu, on March 16, with most of their bodies out of water. Chinese residents cut pieces of flesh from at least one of the whales' bodies for food, reported China Daily. The whales, which were up to 18 meters long and weighed from 22 to 44 tonnes, were found alive by residents on Friday morning. People from the city's fishery department and the border detachment rushed to the beach when they heard the news. Rescue plans were put forward, including using helicopters and large vessels to pull the whales back out to sea, digging water channels to refloat them and waiting for a huge rising tide. However, the whales died and were buried.
http://www.asiaone.com/static/multimedia/gallery/120321_whale/ Pics: The whales were in the midst of being rescued when residents came in secretly at night with cutting tools and cut off pieces of meat. Online news reports did not say whether security officials were stationed around the whales before or after their meat was cut. well since they died, why didn't they just use the meat, why waste it I say and who the fuck would do something like this [editline]wtf[/editline] whats with all the boxes, all I'm saying that since those people went and killed it, which although they shouldn't have, why not instead of burying it outright, take off the remainder of the usable meat and other useful things, why waste it
Poor whales. [editline]24th March 2012[/editline]
well since they died, why didn't they just use the meat, why waste it I say and who the fuck would do something like this
They died because they were butchered. Not because they stranded.
I was going to make a joke about relating this to the decreased whaling in Japan, but then I realized I'd look like a prick :/
Good. No-one picks up an axe and butchers a live whale just because they want to, I'd imagine the residents weren't exactly living in opulence. I put humans being fed high above whales, not to mention this is the natural cycle of things. Or maybe they just wanted to sell them for money, in which case eh.
Harvesting beached whales isn't exactly new. It doesn't say for sure they were found alive after being butchered, though the article points to it pretty hard. hope they weren't though
I feel sorry for that officer stood there, it must reek of rotting fish.
oh god imagine being butchered alive jesus christ
I know it's fucked up but those whales were going to die anyways if it weren't for the rescue efforts. Did scientists ever figure out why whales beach themselves?
If you're gonna kill a whale at least make some use of it. It looks like they just cut off tiny bits here and there then left them to die

So, wait, were they cut up during the night after they were found, or the night before they were found? There's a big difference. With the latter, it's wrong, but with the former, well, it depends on if they were still alive. If they were still alive, it's wrong, but if they were dead, then it's pretty much fine. Don't beached whales basically suffocate/collapse under their own weight? And how could they have been cut up "in the midst of being rescued" if nobody was doing anything? Nonetheless: poor things.

Whale, that sucks.
Considering the whales probably would have been dead by the time they actually got around to carrying out the rescue operation, they might as well have made some use of them. Also if people are desperate enough to eat whale meat they probably were in need of food anyway.
Poor whales. [editline]24th March 2012[/editline] They died because they were butchered. Not because they stranded.
Article doesn't say how many of them were cut up. You're just assuming that they took meat from all of them.
Waste of a good amount of meat, they should have gotten the whole town to make use of one whale or something I'm all for stopping industrial whaling but if you're going to go up to a dying whale and slice a piece off you must clearly be hungry or something. Nothing wrong about this besides the fact that 90% of the meat is left to rot.
Yeah, makes me wonder if the people were moved by famine..
Hey at least it didn't explode.
Poor whales. [editline]24th March 2012[/editline] They died because they were butchered. Not because they stranded.
I know that, not saying its right at all, but since they had been killed, why not remove the rest of the useful meat instead of wasting it
"News"
jesus fucking christ at least kill it first god damn

Fucking disgusting people. It seems water creatures seriously get the short straw whem it comes to people wanting to eat you.
Fucking disgusting people. It seems water creatures seriously get the short straw whem it comes to people wanting to eat you.
Because they taste so good.
The only thing that pisses me off about this is the fact they just took chunks of it. The whole whale could have been used for a wide verity of things, hide, meat, bone, oils, etc. Instead it was literally just butchered. Also what a painful and slow death that must have been, I couldn't imagine the amount of pain it went though =(
Dont whales have a high amount of mercury or some other bad crap?
Cut it up while it was still alive? That's pretty fucked up. China has a horrible track record with humane treatment of animals, so it's not surprising to me that they didn't give a shit. I'm not sure if they could've gotten them out back to sea before they died anyway. The internal damage of their body weight on their organs would kill them eventually. Might as well use beached whales for meat as long as the thing is dead though, cutting meat off a living animal is horribly fucked up, but again it's China. The treatment of sea-life is pretty horrible in that region. [editline]24th March 2012[/editline]
I know that, not saying its right at all, but since they had been killed, why not remove the rest of the useful meat instead of wasting it
You have to clean a whale within a short time frame of it dying or else the meat goes bad fairly quickly. There's people that would pay top dollar for that.
