Russian navy chief warns of China's race for Arctic
Russia will increase naval patrols in the Arctic Ocean to defend its interests against nations such as China seeking a share of the area's mineral wealth, the navy commander was quoted as saying on Monday.
Arctic nations such as Canada, Russia, Norway, the United States and Denmark are trying to file territorial claims over the oil, gas and precious metal reserves under the Arctic sea bed that may become accessible as the ice cap shrinks.
But in a rare public warning about China from Russia's top military brass, Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky warned that China had already joined the scramble for a piece of "the Arctic pie".
"We are observing the penetration of a host of states which ... are advancing their interests very intensively, in every possible way, in particular China," Admiral Vysotsky was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.
Russia would "not give up a single inch" in the Arctic.
"The ships of the Northern and Pacific fleets are continuing to increase their military presence in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation with new navy ships," he was quoted as saying by state RIA news agency.
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin tried to dampen fears of China last month, saying Russia had nothing to fear from its eastern neighbour, though many senior officials in Moscow are privately concerned about China's growing global clout.
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute said in a research note in March that China was positioning itself to gain from the prospect of new Arctic shipping routes and the region's untapped resources as the ice cap melts.
China, the world's fastest growing major economy, has sought to secure long-term oil and gas supplies from Russia, the world's biggest energy producer, which has a population of 142 million compared to China's 1.3 billion.
By international law, Canada, Russia, Norway, the United States and Denmark have a 370km (200 nautical mile) economic zone north of their Arctic borders.
Russia wants more, claiming the Arctic Ocean sea floor is an extension of its continental shelf, though Putin urged Arctic nations last month to cut a deal on how to explore the region's mineral resources.
Russia believes its entire Arctic territory holds twice as much oil and gas reserves as Saudi Arabia, the world's second biggest oil producer after Russia.
We own the arctic. Get out.
:canada:
In what way could they have any part of the arctic?
I mean at least the US has a state which is in close proximity and that's stretching it.
But Santa already owns the north pole!

A strange meteor hit and there's something asleep underneath the ice ever since.
Santa is not going to like this...

Fucking kids need to get off our lawn
I could understand why Canada, Russia, and Norway could have some claim of the arctic, but Denmark and China aren't even close to it. I mean shit even we have a state right on the arctic. China and Denmark can kiss our arctic bordering asses.
I think the UN need to enforce the 'No territorial claims' thing. Keep the arctic completely national boundary free and allow only a limited amount of companies to exploit it.

StupidUsername, denmark owns greenland

Greenland is an autonomous country so it doesn't count. Denmark can go be vikings somewhere else.

Greenland forms part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Icy this becoming a problem if we don't act quick.
I'm going to start giggling once the tempers flare between Russia and China, it'll be like the old days.
First space, then a big block of ice on our own planet
The UK claims the Malvinas, which are actually off the shores of Argentina and thousands of miles from the UK. No one backed Argentina when they to reclaim them.
So international precedent has been established for countries claiming shit that's far away. The US itself hung on to the Panama Canal for a long ass time, and people here in the US bitched about handing that back.
I say let the Chinese claim part of the Arctic if they want. We'll just have to remind them "You can't wok shit in the snow bitches!"
Fuck off China.
You can't take the Northwest Passage from us! You can't. Get your own. This one is ours!

This is like the time Denmark wanted some of our northern Canadian islands.

I don't think china really has any rights to land in the Arctic circle...

NATO nations?
NATO nations?
To what end? They want the stuff above Russia. The stuff north of Canada and Alaska is simply too dangerous. The US and Canadian Naval forces are simply too dangerous to tussle with and the US military would shit a brick shaped like a harpoon missile if Russian or Chinese military ships got near Alaska.
Chinese or Russian subs located in the region might flat out be torpedoed immediately.
The fight here is about the stuff north of Russia. Russia has a decent Navy, but the Chinese might be catching up.

You were asking who could put a dent in the Russian or Chinese militaries and I gave an answer D:
