TOPS payments suspended amid looming Louisiana budget crisis
The Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance alerted state colleges Thursday that it was suspending TOPS scholarship payments immediately due to the state’s historic budget crisis.

TOPS is the state’s popular scholarship program that covers tuition for Louisiana students who meet certain academic standards. It’s provided hundreds of thousands of dollars to students in Louisiana for the past two decades.
This is how my brother is currently paying for school, this is not good at all. Not many details on how this will affect the current semester, but may push a lot of kids out of school for the spring semester.
This is Fucked up, Where is all the money going?

in short, to tax cuts, jindal ran his state into the ground then tried to run a presidential campaign braggin about it, most of those tax cuts were enacted while the state's annual budget was nearly doubled with federal recovery money from katrina, then afterwards they refused to remove the cuts when they were hemorrhaging cash, add in the economic crash, and croney capitalism, and you get where they are now
oh also they repealed their income tax overhaul for some fiscally conservative reason which only made their massive budget hole worse
its all pretty much a playbook of how not to run a budget, jindal for his part refused to raise revanue while lowered taxes and instead thought that he could simply shrink the government to compensate, which only makes things worse as voters have responded by outlawing what they can touch, especially after he drained the state's medicare fund for the elderly to pay for other things
this is a good read

To be fair Jindal had put the TOPS money to the side where it was not to be touched, but he didn't really give the following administration too much of a choice.
its actually impossible to be worse a governor than Jindal, so good luck edwards.
Update: Looks like they're proposing cutting a bunch of college staff. My brother may end up with multiple incompletes this semester because they'd just cut the course, and they're looking to close down where he's supposed to do his practicals. This is a going to screw over a lot of kids.

Louisiana is not a shining example of a great state.

We're 50/50 in most "top states" statistics. Including education, IIRC.

Have you ever considered resurrecting the zombie bones of Huey Long to fix that shit?
TOPS helped me and thousands of others get through school, and the state's contribution is matched dollar for dollar by a private org. It's one of the main vehicles to keep the best graduates from finding higher education and work out of state. The speech last night sounded like he was holding education and even dialysis patients at ransom until we shell out more in taxes.
At least he only took a few weeks to show what he means by his strong 'pro education' stance.

Oh, it's not just education and dialysis patients he's holding ransom for taxes:

If there's no LSU football, he may get recalled or impeached......

Threatening to cut off life support to the helpless was one thing but this.... he just crossed the line.
