SEATTLE – The Seattle City Council unanimously passed an ordinance Monday that gradually increases the minimum wage in the city to $15, which would make it the highest in the nation.

Businesses with over 500 employees nationally - April 1, 2018
Providing health insurance - April 1, 2019
Smaller organizations - April 1, 2022
All these minimum wage increases.
$15 seems a bit dramatic for a moment, but when you consider the amount of economic activity and cost of living in Seattle, it's pretty reasonable.

It's not at the moment, the law takes one year to kick in, and then its a gradual change to a $15 an hour minimum by the end of the decade.
Will there be age brackets, or is it a flat rate?
The article doesn't seem to indicate which.

You do realize it's not going to be all at once, right? That it's going to raise slowly over the course of 3 years starting in 2015

I guess age is a factor.
Last week the Council delayed implementation by a few months and approved a sub-minimumwage for teenagers, a provision opposed by labor representatives.
There is a lot of people upset about this as well because it affects small business that employ a decent amount of people. This will require them to cut back on staffing and a lot of people will go without jobs, or at least the jobs they've had for a long time.

If the staff weren't necessary and could be scaled back, they wouldn't have been employed in the first place.
By 2022 you can wipe your ass with that 15 dollar!
To me this is weird since I make 15/hr doing professional media work...

Holy shit no it won't. Someone says this every thread and gets shut down every time.
hey cool, i wanted to move to Seattle someday and this is just more reason to move there :v:

$15/hour for skilled work seems low. What do you do?
To me this is weird since I make 15/hr doing professional media work...
Exactly. Why should I try hard when I can just get a menial job for the same payment.
$15/hour for skilled work seems low. What do you do?
Doesn't sound low for a lot of US entry level skilled labor
Exactly. Why should I try hard when I can just get a menial job for the same payment.
Because this menial job will tire you out and make you hate yourself and others. At least with media work you hone your skills while hating everyone.
Instead of complaining about minimum wage increases.. why not complain about how shitty wages are for skilled labor?
Isn't that the point? To complain about something you are against?

Living on current minimum is basically impossible though. The fact that some people may be let go is a pretty poor excuse.

15/hr is pretty good for outlying area's in the US that isn't a major city.
Why do people always forget how rural most of the US is?

I don't remember it being impossible for me, just had to get a roommate.

Every time someone brings this up, they lack proof that it will happen. People said the same shit about ACA before it was even signed. All of this is yet to be proven

Its a poor excuse to try to live on minimum wage. Take ambition and try to find work somewhere where you can get a decent wage.

Ambition is all well and good but sometimes people just have to take what they get; they shouldn't be on an un-livable wage simply because it's the only job they can get at the time.
I found out that to live a reasonably comfortable life here, I have to make at least 13 an hour if I work 40 hour weeks. Ideally all I want is about 2 grand a month, because around half of that would go to paying rent (apartments here are anywhere from 700-1300 a month), another $850 easy going to paying for internet, electricity, gas for transportation, cell phone bill, insurance for vehicle and then $250 or so for food (food is expensive, and I try to eat cheapish healthy because poor), that's just to live, anything extra would be saved and occasionally spent for eating out once in a while, or a new video game or taking a girl on a date, that kind of thing. Do I need a phone? Maybe not, but most jobs like to be able to contact you, and having a way to contact people is important. Internet is pretty much a basic need in modern society as well.
I would honestly say that anyone should be able to make that, because that's just living month to month with a bit of leisure. $13 an hour minimum wage and then hike every other wage up by a similar amount. However, 15 makes sense because minimum wage jobs are unlikely to give you a whole 40 hours, most get like 30-35 hours a week.

People continue to say that, but i highly doubt it.
People with more money = People who will spend more money. So honestly I believe it isn't going to be that dramatic. But, at the same time I'm not expert but who knows. If you can't survive as a business without slave labor then you don't deserve to be in business.

You shouldn't have to have a roommate to survive. That's bollocks.
Doesn't increasing minimum wage just cause the price of goods and services to rise, which in turn nullifies the increase?
Doesn't increasing minimum wage just cause the price of goods and services to rise, which in turn nullifies the increase?
Not proportionally.
Doesn't increasing minimum wage just cause the price of goods and services to rise, which in turn nullifies the increase?
If that happens it means too many people are working minimum wage.
Doesn't increasing minimum wage just cause the price of goods and services to rise, which in turn nullifies the increase?
Prices will raise over time regardless of increase from minimum wage.
Doesn't increasing minimum wage just cause the price of goods and services to rise, which in turn nullifies the increase?
I'd hope not, because if that were the case then our society is doomed.
And then those who's work isn't worth 15/h lose their jobs and there will be less people applying for harder jobs or those requiring longer education if they can get almost as much at any other job. Less jobs, less supply, higher prices. Hey I know what to do when that happens, lets raise the minimum wage again.
If that happens it means too many people are working minimum wage.
Minimum wages don't exist in a vacuum. You need a reason to employ people for jobs that give you more than minimum wage and it still has to be profitable so companies will increase prices.
Prices will raise over time regardless of increase from minimum wage.
And what reason would that be?
