18-year old soldier to receive medal for rendering first aid to stabbing victims at his high school

[quote]It was his immediate response on the morning of April 9 at his high school that earned him the Army Achievement Medal. Fleischauer, a private first class, used his military first aid training to help treat the stab wounds of several fellow students. A sophomore, authorities say, brought two knives to school and went on a rampage in a first-floor hallway before classes began, injuring 20 students and a security guard.
Fleischauer was at school, early as usual, on April 9 when he heard screaming and then a fire alarm. He tended to a male student's stab wound outside the school with first aid supplies provided by fellow senior Alex Pasculle, who is an emergency medical technician with Murrysville Medic One.
Fleischauer said he patched the student up “as best I could” until ambulances arrived. Afterward, he helped three more injured students and calmed them until paramedics got to the school.
Fleischauer called his response “human nature.”
“I'm glad I was there. I'm glad I had that training,” he said

Helluva kid
This is the stuff that I like to see. It always seems like if an accident or incident happens and there are Army personnel around, they will always help. It's a good thing that we all are given the training to deal with injuries in an expedited manner. Hell, my unit went farther and decided to give me the next level of training, plus IV training. A+ for this guy, a lot of guys straight out of BCT don't know how to effectively apply their Combat Lifesaver training very well.
Don't worry, if anyone gets stabbed around me I know how to put on a plaster

yeah but first you have to suck on the wound and take out the bad blood

So I wasn't the only one to read that as "18-year old soldier to receive medal for rendering stabbing to first-aid victims at his high school". Damnit.
Fucking hell thats my age and my area too. My school (North Hills) is even fundraising to help pay for their medical bills.
For all the negative shit I see about my generation this is truly uplifting.

And htat's because they have the necessary training to actually help. Most people don't, and they'd rather just call 911 and hope for the best then try to lend aid, mess it up, and get sued for their trouble.

I don't know how this works in the USA but isn't it possible for the parents to sue the school for the medical bills?
As a Canadian the thought of being put into debt because a maniac stabbed me seems silly and backwards.

Yes, when my son broke his right thumb because some kid pushed him I was able to sue the school for improper care of the situation. He had to go through the whole day, and the school nurse said "it was only a jammed thumb."
Two breaks on the growth plate. Insurance covered it, luckily.

Yeah but does that mean he is a solider and he also has to go to a public high school as a student?

Good Samaritan law prevents from being sued.

Just because you're in the military, doent mean you don't get an education.

Isn't that just on a state to state basis? The whole US is not covered by it last time I checked.

Don't they have military schools?

Pretty sure that is just post-highschool
First aid training is always a good thing.
Isn't that being taught in school though? I remember my high school taught various First Aid methods for various situations. That's standard, right?

It varies from country to country, probay even varies between school boards with in said country. Didn't learn it here in Canada.

In some schools it's a requirement to graduate. I was homeschooled and both my parents work at a hospital so that's pretty much that, but several of my friends had to take a basic first aid class before they could graduate. However I know people who went to a different school and they never learned any first aid, so I'd assume it varies school-to-school, let alone state by state.
