A group of child experts has asked for a review of the rules under which magazines such as Playboy, Zoo and Ralph are classified, saying they are increasingly explicit and contributing to the sexualisation of children. In a letter to a parliamentary committee signed by Reverend Costello, former chief justice of the Family Court Alastair Nicholson, actor Noni Hazlehurst and 34 academics, child professionals and advocates, the collective says such material should be restricted to adults-only premises. The group is particularly disturbed by the prevalence of "teen sex" magazines featuring women apparently aged more than 18 but looking younger and styled with braces and pigtails but in highly sexualised poses and sometimes performing sex acts. Under Australian censorship laws it is illegal to use under-age models or models who appear to be under 18. Reverend Costello said exposure to the magazines robbed children of their innocence and contributed to negative body image in young people. "This is something we can do something about without it imposing on those who are 18 and older and want to buy (the magazines) and know they are there," he told Sky News on Monday. Reverend Costello said parents could monitor what their children watched on television, and viewed on the internet, but not what they saw in public places. It was reasonable to protect them from salacious magazine covers in places such as petrol stations, he added. "This is not a denial of anyone's liberties, this is actually saying if we value children we will listen to the research," Reverend Costello said. "They're just not prominently displayed where kids reach out for their Violent Crumble bar." Julie Gale, director of the lobby group Kids Free 2B Kids, said easy access to the internet meant young people are experiencing unprecedented exposure to pornographic images, voluntarily or involuntarily. "But allowing pornography and overtly sexualised images to be sold in the public arena with easy access for children and teens tells them that this is acceptable," she said. "It gives it public validation."[/release] Oh Australia, you so silly.
Oh fuck no. Oh wait, I use my PSP. OH FUCK NO.
You came late to the party. http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=919548
I wish my country would harden the fuck up
No, not the their innocence!
Robs them of their innocence? Kids should be curious of sex, else they'll end up all weird like every other place that made sex taboo.
At least they're not getting robbed of their freedoms...oh wait
Robs them of their innocence? It's not like the whole shop is covered in porn, one shelf and the covor is censored?
I wish my country would harden the fuck up
There's a joke here somewhere.
There's a joke here somewhere.
Hmm... Well, Geodude knows Harden...
Hmm... Well, Geodude knows Harden...
Wait, I got one.
I wish my country would harden the fuck up
Isn't that what they're trying to prevent?
If you're a kid and you accidentally see porn, you just look away because you don't like it.

One idiot says something stupid and that instantly is Australia's entire opinion.
Who cares, i have the Internet :smug: But i seriously expected this. Australia is taking a nose dive to the shitter.
Yargh, we're descendants of convicts transported to this country by boat! We think our kids can't look at tittehs cause it'll rob them of their innocence, and that's our job!
Cleavage is about the only thing shown on the covers of these magazines and they're going all out with the "Soft Porn" synopsis. Honestly kids will get a glimpse of the magazine and proceed to the games or cartoon section. They're not gonna pull up a god damn lawn chair and sit there reading Playboy.
Austrailia is Duke nukem's Hell

I could understand if they didn't want kids to watch hardcore anal porn, because it gives them a wrong idea of what sex is, but maybe parents should just tell their kids about sex instead of trying to make it a taboo.
Reverend Costello said parents could monitor what their children watched on television, and viewed on the internet, but not what they saw in public places.
Do they seriously want children to have an Orwellian childhood? It'll only cause more problems. [editline]12:18PM[/editline]
And so what if they do? It's naked women, there's nothing wrong with that, not even at a young age. The argument is that back in the Medieval days a hut was just one room, so children could see everything and understood it from a young age, as the population became smarter and richer those with big houses could move into another room or write it down to keep it from the children. But now due to the media children now can access sexual material and we're just reverting to medieval times in terms of sexualisation of children. Whether this is good or bad i don't know but shielding Kids from everything that's bad in the world will only end in tears as when they'll come to actually doing something themselves they'll expect it to be easy/done for them.
I found out about sex and swearwords on my first week of school.
Hey, we have this cool new thing that might replace the need for porn magazines when the kinks are worked out. It's pretty new and radical, but one day it might work. It's called the internet. Word has it, you can actually find lots, lots, and lots of soft-core porn on it. It's really quite mind boggling.
Wait, is it legal for me to buy playboy if i'm under 18? I know i can buy Zoo.

I find it Ironic that the Ancestors of Criminals are trying to be so "OH WE ARE LAW"
The country isn't 'going down this shitter'. There's no more bans on R18+ games soon enough, and the ban didn't make much difference in the first place. All that happened was they censored Left 4 Dead 2, and all the other games that were challenged were either tweaked slightly or they appealed and were let right through. None of that matters anymore because it's gone, and anyway who even gets porn in shops. The closest thing to porn anyone buys nowadays is Zoo Magazine.
All you do when you're a kid is go "lololololol nekkid XD" and then move on.
What causes people to start thinking nudity is bad?
What causes people to start thinking nudity is bad?
Because you can see dem willy and kitty
