CERN rumored to have found the Higgs Boson (again)

From Daily Mail:
Scientists at Cern will announce that the elusive Higgs boson 'God Particle' has been found at a press conference next week, it is believed.
Five leading theoretical physicists have been invited to the event on Wednesday - sparking speculation that the particle has been discovered.
Scientists at the Large Hadron Collider are expected to say they are 99.99 per cent certain it has been found - which is known as 'four sigma' level.
And Gizmodo:
We've heard this clamoring before, but after years of experimenting and hypothesizing, the UK Telegraph says that CERN—keepers of the Large Hadron Collider—will hold a press conference on July 4 to confirm the existence of the Higgs boson particle, commonly referred to as the God Particle. It could be the biggest announcement/discovery in the history of physics.
The rumor suggests that scientists will announce a 4-sigma level discovery, meaning they're 99.99-percent certain the Higgs boson exists.
This is not a repeat from December. Just rumors, but Daily Mail is reporting that Peter Higgs has been invited to the conference on Wednesday.
And some copypaste basic info from MSNBC of what the Higgs Boson is.
To refresh your memory, the Higgs boson is the only fundamental subatomic particle predicted by theory but not yet detected. It's thought to play a role in endowing some particles, such as the W and Z boson, with mass ... while leaving other particles, such as the photon, massless. The Higgs mechanism, proposed by British physicist Peter Higgs and others in the 1960s, could have played a role in electroweak symmetry breaking, which was a key event in the rise of the universe as we know it.
The Higgs boson is so key to the current understanding of fundamental physics that Nobel-winning scientist Leon Lederman nicknamed it the "God Particle" — a term that has been making other physicists wince ever since. Another religion-tinged cliche would be to call it the "holy grail of particle physics," as CERN physicist John Ellis has. He says finding the Higgs is a key goal for the $10 billion Large Hadron Collider.
I'll be happy if they do but happier if they don't.

Indeed, it would mean there's a lot less to discover if it is found.
To the guy who rated the OP optimistic, there's like a 90% chance they'll find the Higgs Boson.
EDIT: Yep, they found it.
I'll be happy if they do but happier if they don't.
Why would you be happier if they don't? Did I miss something bad about it?
Can someone, in extremely simple terms, explain to me what this particle is exactly and why is it important?
Can someone, in extremely simple terms, explain to me what this particle is exactly and why is it important?
The Higgs' Boson is the theoretical particle responsible for fundamental particles having mass.
If it doesn't exist, a lot of our current theories on how shit works (tm) will need to be revised big time.

In quantum mechanics all fields have a particle associated with them.
If the Higgs Boson exists, then the Higgs field exists. Everything is covered in a Higgs field that slows more massive particles down. This gives them their mass. Or so they think. No Higgs field? No explanation for why things have mass.

So it doesn't actually affect anything material, just our guesses at how some things in the universe works?

The Higgs theory isn't all that exciting of a theory. If it is disproven, then woopie, that means there is still a lot we don't know, a lot to learn and it is probably more exciting then we could ever have imagined.
[editline]2nd July 2012[/editline]
Either way I'll be happy.

Particle physics in a nutshell
if i put my sock into this thing can it find the other one cause that would really own

I haven't been following the Higgs Boson much, so does this mean it's just a particle that they can't do jack shit with? I thought they'd find something practical with it.
I get what you say, proven or not I'm not really excited now.

That's a bad attitude. Sounds like a politician. Knowledge is much more rewarding then practical applications. But remember with more knowledge and similar comes unexpected advances. Studying subatomic particles had no practical applications, but what they discovered lead to the invention of the transistor which is why the computer you're using now is working, along with almost all other electronics.
I can't see how messing with Quantum Psychics will ever backfire on us! :v:

Quantum Psychics? Do they have power over subatomic events?

Yeah man, those Quantum Psychics.
I love the reason why it was nicknamed the god particle in the first place.
This nickname for the Higgs boson is usually attributed to Leon Lederman, but it is actually the result of Lederman's publisher's censoring. Originally Lederman intended to call it "the goddamn particle", because of its elusiveness.
Suddenly I went from hating the nickname to loving it.
Daily Mail.
Practical application possibilities of this.

So its the thing that makes things act as things?
I was told that the official announcement will be the 4th of july, this will be my firework, just hope it's not a dud.
Humanitys salvation.
There's been a thread on SA for a few weeks saying they've found it, but are keeping it under wraps until a conference to announce it. Pretty cool if they really found it.
