literally took me 6 months to find a waffle maker in a store nearby

guess pikelets are just too all encompassing tolet any (possibly superior) competition get a foothold.

Huh.

Having never tasted them I assumed the crunchiness came from loads of sugar and thus they were really sweet. Probably tied into that American things of adding sugar to everything.

it depends on the recipe really, the very crunchy ones are kinda like the buttermilk pancakes you get that have sugar in the mix but you can also get ones that are borderline crumpet-tier in sweetness

although usually yes they got more fat and sugar because it helps frying but you can make fairly crunchy ones without ridiculous amounts of sugar

The crunchiness is more an effect of crisping the dough with heat. They generally aren't very sweet on their own.
