The government is moving forward with plans to ban branding on cigarette packs, Public Health Minister Jane Ellison told MPs.
She said an independent report found it was "very likely to have a positive impact" on public health and stop children from starting to smoke.
Shadow health secretary Luciana Berger called for immediate legislation to ban branding, telling MPs: "There is an overwhelming body of evidence in favour of standardised packaging and there can be no excuse for a further delay."
She added: "How many more children are going to take up smoking before this government makes a decision?"
think of the children
despite the fact cigarettes in stores are required to be stored in a sealed cabinet anyways
Well, looks like I'll be investing in a cigarette case
but under the current laws you can't even see cigarette packaging because they hide it in units with sliding doors on them. in fact you have to be ID'd to even ask to see the product range
grotesque

Actually that depends on the size of the shop, small stores don't require their tobacco gantry to be shut

I guess this doesn't mainly focus on direct prevention of sales but through other indirect means, like a child seeing you with this in your hand and you have to explain it? I dunno.
Yet smokers will still buy the packs. Great job.
This is fucking stupid, I'm sick of seeing anti smoking ads on billboards because everyone already knows smoking isn't healthy and they're just not nice to look at.
She added: "How many more children are going to take up smoking before this government makes a decision?"
I find this "think of the children" attitude so fucking dumb no matter what it is applied to.
Might as well do the same to alcohol, how is it any different?
All alcohol should just be blank green bottles with white text saying the name otherwise children might see a pretty bottle and become an alcoholic.

Anything with lots of saturated sugar and trans fats should be in a brown paper bag with the name of the product written on with a sharpie otherwise people will be attracted to the pretty package and eat it and become unhealthy.

Everyone knows it's unhealthy, yet people still don't care.
I would fight against a ban on tobacco - but all they're doing is trying to take away any non-parental incentive which isn't a big deal. Besides, treating people from self-inflicted diseases is bloody expensive.

It's the only thing the government can actually control. What will REALLY solve the problem is parents understanding and taking an interest in their own and their kids health. They can't do shit about that.

I don't really think those are the same thing. Isn't the whole deal about smoking that it directly affects other people? I mean, is second-hand drinking a thing? second-hand eating?
Basically fucking over an entire industry with all this price hiking and packaging bullshit. If smokers want to smoke they should be able to without all this bullshit. People actually earn their living, feed their families etc off their job at a cigarette factory somewhere. Fag companies lose money, people lose jobs. It's a vicious cycle.
I'm not a smoker, but I think all this stuff is ridiculous.
I'm not sure why people are attacking the ideas. At least they're showing a little bit of care for the people around them (knowing that even if they sold less, they would make less money). It is sort of a selfless act by the government to help the people yet some people see this as bad. Smoking is bad. It doesn't matter what people say or how they try to sugar-coat it, smoking is bad. It causes endless amounts of diseases and ailments yet some people feel that 'it helps people relax' is a valid justification when its clearly not. It's like saying 'oh yeah, I cut myself, it helps me unwind'. At the end of the day, they would both amount to harming your body so why would smoking be more acceptable than cutting yourself?
Human right act. As long as smoking remains legal, people can smoke as much as they want. If the government are so pissed off about smoking, why do they have to invest more money into packaging? Why not just ban it if they feel that strongly about it? If this is what my tax bill is going towards, there is no hope for us.
About 6 months after them being introduced people will stop paying attention to them.

Who cares about the cigarette industry.
Just because at one point it got popular and a lot of people like it doesn't mean it should stay that way.
Force smokers to get a permit or something so they can keep smoking until they die then ban it entirely like they banned the sale of mercury.

I thought it was proven that smoking brings in far more money for the state than it loses due to health care costs.

wut
I've always seen cigarettes sold behind the counter in shops. I don't think I've ever seen a place where you have to ask to see them because they're always on display

We've had plain packaging exactly like that picture in the OP for ages here, and it hasn't caused society to collapse. It's caused smokers to take a step back and think about what they are doing though http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/calls-to-quitline-soar-after-plain-packaging-laws-20140113-30qvf.html
It's always sad to see jobs go, but to be honest I wouldn't really feel bad if the tobacco industry just died, which it slowly but surely is in Australia.
Before mom switched to ecigs, she said that if they did that here that her and her friends would treat them like trading cards.
they've done this in the uk for a while
[editline] . [/editline]
people still smoke

Nobody here cares about plain packaging, in fact people here treat them like trading cards

So this wasn't scary enough? Seriously, it won't make me change my habits.
Though since i got an ecig i've smoked a lot less.
For the people going "rah rah this does nothing government intervention people will never stop smoking", smoker rates have dropped world wide for the past 30 years straight and are currently at all time lows. This shit works.

Except that's not why less people smoke.

I don't think you know what that is

Public awareness about cigarettes' relation to cancer is a massive contributor to the downward trend. How do you think that information is spread??

No, everyone does not know, especially young people just starting out. They're mainly the ones being targeted by the images.
People who dont smoke will continue to not smoke
People who smoke will continue to smoke.
This is just dumb.
It's okay to have colorful bottles of liquor, but you can't show logos? What a load of bull, how the hell will that help?
I thought it was proven that smoking brings in far more money for the state than it loses due to health care costs.
Umm nope how could that possibly be the case?? At any rate it's not the point of the state to make money; it's supposed to care for its citizens.
