BJP leader Narendra Modi tweeted: "India has won. Good times ahead."
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-27435856 This is pretty huge - A guy who worked in a tea stall has made his way to becoming the Prime Minister of one of the most populous countries in the world.
It says he's a Hindu and a nationalist, anyone forsee tension with Pakistan ahead?
This is pretty huge - A guy who worked in a tea stall has made his way to becoming the Prime Minister of one of the most populous countries in the world.
Bollywood is gonna turn it into a musical, just you wait
It says he's a Hindu and a nationalist, anyone forsee tension with Pakistan ahead?
Modi will, in all likelihood, be more of a hard ass than the current congress party which tends to pussy foot around the issues we have with Pakistan in order to prevent losing the Muslim votebank, which is vital to their power. What this means is that if Pakistan pulls another 26/11, Modi can and will reign hellfire on them in return. Not necessarily a good thing, but he has time and time again stated that he won't take that shit lying down. Basically, everyone here in India expects him to be extremely firm about the lines that Pakistan dare not cross.
could you elaborate on the thing about him starting as a tea stall dude? that sounds pretty cool
could you elaborate on the thing about him starting as a tea stall dude? that sounds pretty cool
http://www.caravanmagazine.in/reportage/emperor-uncrowned?page=1,1
Modi was the third of six children born to Damodardas Mulchand Modi and his wife, Heeraben. The family, from the low Ghanchi caste, lived deep inside the narrow and winding alleys of the medieval city of Vadnagar. The Ghanchis have traditionally been pressers and sellers of vegetable oil, but Damodardas Modi—to provide for his large family—also ran a teashop at the Vadnagar railway station, while Heeraben and the children operated the oil mill. “Narendra used to help his father in the mornings at the railway station, and when the bell rang at the school, he just crossed over the railway track to come to class,” recalled Dr Sudhir Joshi, a schoolmate of Modi who now practices ayurvedic medicine in Vadnagar.

could you elaborate on the thing about him starting as a tea stall dude? that sounds pretty cool
He helped his father run a tea stall and came from a very humble background. There's more stuff about him here too. What sets him apart is that unlike the silver spoon in mouth Gandhi family which has been riding on the coat tail of Mahatma Gandhi's role in Indian Independence since forever, this guy is pretty much the embodiment of the everyday man. He really has led a rather interesting life and has one hell of a work ethic - the guy is always working.
from the little that i've read i think that a guy like modi is what india needs right now tbh
from the little that i've read i think that a guy like modi is what india needs right now tbh
Yeah, but the guy does have a shady past as well. He had a particularly bad role in the 2002 Godhra riots which killed a lot of Muslims. A lot of the evidence against him "disappeared" and a chief witness against him, Haren Pandya, died before he could testify to his claims about Modi's "true" actions as governor during this period.
yeah i was thinking after reading through that stuff that i'd be a bit uncomfortable with that RSS background
from the little that i've read i think that a guy like modi is what india needs right now tbh
Oooh I've heard that one before. Can't exactly put my finger on it though, something with rome, or germany.
i always knew cheeseman was a nazi finally someones called him out on it
Yeah! Let's celebrate! A mass murderer is in a position of power!
from the little that i've read i think that a guy like modi is what india needs right now tbh
he has the public support because rn his party (the BJP) have been a lot more active in doing stuff esp for the poorer & rural-er people (who make up the majority of the voters) he's also kinda a mass murderer with the whole turning a blind eye to the various riots and basically initiating the Babri Mosque destruction and riots, that's why muslims are so uneasy about him he's also pretty distanced from the rest of the people in his party so it seems unlikely he'll be able to do much stuff in the grand scale
Yeah! Let's celebrate! A mass murderer is in a position of power!
Context please
Context please
He's purported to have a hand in the 2002 Godhra riots and the demolition of the Babri Masjid, and he's also kind of anti-minority in general and anti-Muslim in particular. Long story short, he's a grade A asshat who ended up in a position of power. The fun's going to begin from here on out.
I like it how ppl voted the OP winner, even though they have no idea who the hell this guy is
I like it how ppl voted the OP winner, even though they have no idea who the hell this guy is
b-but he came from a tea stall, he can't be a bad guy if he came from a tea stall.

I don't support the guy, but there are some things that need to be cleared up. During the time of the riots, he issued a public statement immediately calling for calm, sent letters to the chief ministers of surrounding states pleading for help, asked for the army and did everything he could. Nobody helped and he was then slammed for not doing anything. As for the Godhra riots themselves, I think people should know what happened there to understand what happened under this guy's rule to make him such a controversial. I sure as shit don't trust him, but seek some solace in the fact that the likelihood of pulling off anything on a bigger scale will likely never happen and that most people's expectations of the things he will pull off while in power are most likely over hyped. If anything, it's turning out to be a direct recreation of Obama being ushered in under the promise of hope and change after 2 disastrous terms of Bush. We might see some benefit, but it could just as easily not be as awesome as previously thought.
Maybe this time, Obama could turn to India instead of Pakistan. Pakistan was just a waste of time, the country was support by the US, and they funded terrorist to attack the US. Except that the same terrorist are the ones responsible for all the pakistani bombings as well. The irony!
The lesser of the two evils was elected.. it's just extremely discomforting regarding his right wing hindu nationalist views, being a member of RSS and all. I can't say for sure right now that the BJP party being in power exactly bodes well for the 20 percent of the population that doesn't identify as Hindu. Pretty sure his platform has already come out and said they will lax their intended use of nuclear arms, whereas before India claimed they were self-defense only. Meaning this could increase tensions with Pakistan, along with his already bigoted opinions towards Muslims. Honestly in my opinion hindu nationalism isn't much worse than islamic fundamentalism, it's been the cause of a lot of atrocities in India's short time as an independent country. If left unchecked and even encouraged (whether directly or indirectly) it could cause a lot of problems for the 'minorities' of India in the near future. I believe some videos have surfaced online of supporters/party members of the BJP showing support for the party by claiming it will bring 'vengeance' and such, so there is definitely reason to be worried. Not to mention the 'hindu nationalism' was pretty much the second biggest reason for him garnering so many votes, behind peoples expectations that Modi will be able to raise India's economic growth again as it's sharply fallen off the past couple of years.

Because that's what this country will be after the US finally gets tired of our shit. Also I believe India already is allied with the US. It's kind of the US' job since both are countries that hate each other and have nukes.
