Earlier today, someone decided to post to the Android issue tracker complaining about the lack of multiuser support for smartphones. Within a few hours, a developer at Google responded and closed the issue, remarking that "the development team has implemented this feature and it will be available as a part of the next public build." Sounds pretty definitive to us.
The "next public build" is the only ambiguous part of this statement, though that Googler is almost definitely referring to the "L" release of Android scheduled to land some time later this year. Multiuser support on smartphones is something Google had indicated an interest in previously, but it limited the feature to tablets as part of Android 4.2. At the time, multiuser mode was fairly limited and tended to impact device performance somewhat severely, though it was significantly improved in Android 4.3.
This new functionality will likely come to the excitement of a great many Android phone owners with children, nosy friends and relatives, or who use their phones for business purposes.
About time they did something like this.
Might be nice, I know it's a long shot but I wonder if they can implement some kind of system with AD.
I hope this comes with extensive per-user permissions. Sounds like it will but I hope it's more than just a few checkboxes
i can't think of a single time where this would have any practical application with a phone

What if you're friend/parent/cousin/sibling/etc wants to use your phone and you don't want them to find your gay furry porn all over your device?
What if you're friend/parent/cousin/sibling/etc wants to use your phone and you don't want them to find your gay furry porn all over your device?
This has almost happened to me so many times
Probably useful if you have kids.
i would just set up them with their own phone and parental controls. i don't see why that would need multi-user
Eh, multi-user support has been there for a long ass time, but for some stupid reason it's only enabled on tablets. If you're rooted you can easily enable it on any device.
I hope this means they are going to make it more configurable though.

that's a fair idea, a guest account would be kind of neat

and
Doesn't Windows Phone 8.1 already have this, along with a special environment for kids?
i would just set up them with their own phone and parental controls. i don't see why that would need multi-user
That also implies that you can afford another phone, and want to buy one for them, no need to waste money unnecessarily.
Why not offer the exact same functionality with no need to buy another phone, you're not solving the problem, you're circumventing it :v:
My brother who has two quite young kids, being at the age where you don't really want them to have their own device, but they'll be lending yours constantly (games and such).
.. Which implies you can afford another phone?

you're going to share your smartphone with your child? just buy a moto E or something even cheaper with parental controls
So I can have a setting for me, and a setting for 'friends', with a fresh browser history, and some folders not being accessible?
That's a pretty sweet deal....
like really it's probably going to cost you more by lending an expensive phone to a child rather than just buying cheap ones
this is a neat feature but it's not really a deal-breaker for me. i just can't see how useful it really is
It's a phone. You don't need multi-user security on a fucking phone.

At the time, they couldn't add it to phones because Nokia had a patent for multiple users on a phone.
It's a phone. You don't need multi-user security on a fucking phone.
No, its YOU who don't. I might, you don't know me. A proper first party multi-user system in android would benefit more than just phones.

What about tablets that run andriod.
What about tablets that run andriod.
Android tablets already have multiple user accounts
What about tablets that run andriod.
Android Tablets have always supported multiple users. OP has picture showing so.

I disagree, I find that a lot of couples have been sharing smart phones recently. Also with home phones now starting to run Android on them, having an account system would work great for a family. Allow separate address books that also connect with their Google accounts, plus allow whatever user to customize their own icon layout and background.
It doesn't make sense for mobile phones, but it's a handy feature to have on the back end anyways. It could also be used as an effective administrator lock for Parents/Businesses.
If you have shit on your phone you don't want anyone else to see beyond contacts then you have too much shit on your phone or are relying on it too much for tasks that a tablet or a computer should be doing instead.

Never too much shit on my phone. It's a mini computer, why not use it as such?

Do you know what plans are and how expensive they are?
i can't think of a single time where this would have any practical application with a phone
I'm still glad that they're giving us the option to do it anyway.

no i am too but i don't think it's anything amazing like some make it out to be
why would you share an expensive smartphone with a child? what if you both need to have a phone and are away from eachother? what if the kid breaks your phone?
Never too much shit on my phone. It's a mini computer, why not use it as such?
I really need to get with the times.

Still expensive for lot's of people
Still expensive for lot's of people
most couples only have 1-2 kids. $100 and a top up every once in a while isn't much to pay for the safety of your child and the benefit of not having to share your phone with them (which practically nobody does)
