An Iowa teenager is suing his school district and several administrators because he says they didn't do enough to protect him from bullying and an assault that left him permanently disabled. They say it culminated in last October's attack, in which two students pelted him in the head with footballs, leaving him with severe brain injuries that required surgery to remove a blood clot and with permanent disabilities. Schools never gave a shit if you were bullied, If you told your teacher, either they ignore you, or they simply move the kid to the back of the class.
why do people do bad things aaargh
I hope they win. Schools never gave a shit if you were bullied, If you told your teacher, either they ignore you, or they simply move the kid to the back of the class.
me to if he wins that will make schools start having to give a shit
Schools never gave a shit if you were bullied, If you told your teacher, either they ignore you, or they simply move the kid to the back of the class.
you must have had a shitty school or something, bullying in my district always had pretty harsh consequences
you must have had a shitty school or something, bullying in my district always had pretty harsh consequences
My school had a zero tolerance policy, so basically everyone got in trouble, even the trouble got in trouble.
I got beat up once by a guy two grades up and a head taller than me in high school, and I got a week's suspension because he was on the track team and was basically their star runner Being on any sort of sports team basically makes you immune to penalties so you can bully whoever you want and get away with it and that's fucking dumb Fuck bullies, seriously
My school had a zero tolerance policy, so basically everyone got in trouble, even the trouble got in trouble.
I believe we had that too, and it's fucking stupid. If you're getting emotionally beaten down ruthlessly by the same guy every day, you are within your rights as a living, breathing, feeling creature to punch him in the face
an assault that left him permanently disabled.
what the fuck

Because that is physical confrontation and not the same. That is escalating it and taking it to a new level. You should be able to defend yourself, but you should not be allowed to start a fight.

It's not like I want to get out of the trouble with broken limbs nor bruises!
zero tolerance exists because its unfair to expect school staff to play judge jury and executioner. its not their job to sort out disputes between students because that basically makes them liable for whatever happens, zero tolerance protects the staff (some argue at the cost of the students)
Schools never gave a shit if you were bullied, If you told your teacher, either they ignore you, or they simply move the kid to the back of the class.
Or they take plan C, they blame you.

Do you hit everyone who insults you? There is no excuse for that kind of behavior. Sure there might be some kind of notable exception. But unless that arises, I don't see the need to escalate it further into physical violence.
you must have had a shitty school or something, bullying in my district always had pretty harsh consequences
we didn't have any too harsh consequences for bullying. and we've seen some bullying around here. but it's just that most of my peers (if not all) realized soon after primary school that bullying is pointless and stupid, also childish.
My school couldn't control the fighting very well/at all. They'd exclude anybody who was anywhere near any fights that were bad enough to be reported. I remember when the school douchebag said something to my friend who just turned around and started beating the shit out of him, the teachers took their time breaking it up and made sure he got a good few hits in first. I guess different places take different approaches.
I hope they win. Schools never gave a shit if you were bullied, If you told your teacher, either they ignore you, or they simply move the kid to the back of the class.
back when i was in school, bullying was different... If you told the teacher, they didn't get in trouble... YOU DID me and three other people were locked inside a toilet on the third floor of our school (bathrooms were locked during lesson times so if you needed to go you had to ask for the key from the teacher, which is infinitely more embarrassing as a unwritten rule we would wait until multiple people needed to go before risking the embarrassment to go up and ask) anyway, my bully came with us and when we were all inside he locked us inside with the keys, then jammed bundles of damp toilet tissue inside the door hinges. so we became double locked in, because even if the door wasn't locked, we would never be able to force the door open we sat trapped inside the toilets for 5 hours until the end of the day when a caretaker found us, which took another hour to get us out, the bully told the teachers that us three went out of school and bunked off. when we told the teachers the truth, we locked up three, were the ones punished, because "we didn't understand the type of upbringing the bully had." and weren't being respectful of the bullies needs after a week's worth of detention, we HAD to attend a counseling meeting where we had to apologise to the bully for not understanding his 'plight' of living in a poor household. Public schools in east London as a child where, weird...
Should really sue the bully, no the school district.
I wonder, did successful people were ever bullied as a kid once in their lives? Do bullied victims ever harbored the thought of revenge later in their lives? What if those murderous gunmen who goes on a shooting spree were bullied victims in their early lives?

That always irked me.

If something happens under their roof and they don't know how to deal with it they should get someone else to do it. In the event of a violent assault they shouldn't even be touching it - it should immediately become a police issue
I know first hand how bad things can get when people dont treat bullying like a serious issue. ive mentioned this in another thread a while back but, I got bullied really badly in highschool, nobody ever did anything about it. always found it strange how if you get a gang of your dickhead mates and beat a guy untill he has cracked ribs and broken fingers in the street- they put you in a cell but- 'you do the same thing on school grounds its "harmless pushing and shoving" and "kids being kids". one constant throughout my highschool life was that the teachers would always "deal with" bullying in the most disgusting and ineffective way possible. one teacher, ms austin, took it to the extent she may as well have fucking joined in, i still remember her saying things like "well the way you dress, you are practically asking for it!" while the twats where still in earshot, and doing nothing as they jeered abuse at me from behind her . i actully left half way through sixth form becuase it got so bad. one of the worst times was when i got stabbed with a craft knife in art class, TWICE by the same kid and they still refused to take any serious action against the people who were repeatedly targeting me- (in this case they just got a police officer to show the kid a video on how knife crime effects families) and he and his friends still chanted abuse about it across the classroom for weeks. i literally couldnt work in school for fear of being assulted, and the effect it had on my grades still causes me trouble in life to date.
At least he's decided to sue the school instead of doing what the last guy did and grab a shotgun It's pretty annoying that the only way to get attention to this shit is either with a lawyer or a gun
God, last time I was bullied was 5 years ago before I finished school. Sadly the Headteacher decided his response would be. "You are a boxer, I expected more from you." My dad always warned me never to fight as being a boxer your fists 'can' be classed as a deadly weapon. Although at my age I doubt it would count and was more an attempt by my father to stop me fighting. Well eventually after losing my grandfather and grandmother I wasn't in a great mentality. They decided to try and bully me that day. I ended up breaking the 'leaders' nose and taking 2 teeth out his jaw. I got suspended, and the bully got away scot free. Still I was never bullied from that time on-wards. Disgusting how teachers can be so negligent towards such matters however.

Bullies are never dealt with, I was bullied until 15 y/o at which point I just gave up trying to deal with it and punched someone right in the face, I got some breathing space after that.

Jesus christ.....and I thought I had a tough time with bullies. I hope the teen wins. Seriously though....bullying is a problem that needs to be taken care of. No, I'm not talking about moving the asshole(s) in question to the back of the class. Actually take some fucking action! God, in high school I got expelled for the year after standing up for myself. I tried for 3 fucking months to get the problem LEGITIMATELY solved....and nothing happened. Fuck Zero Tolerance man.
The way that schools go about Zero Tolerance is awful. Oh, so you a guy throws you against lockers and kicks you where it hurts. You punch him in the face and then both of you get suspended. Sometimes only the bullied faces consequences because only when they fight back is it noticed.
Would be okay if fighting back solved anything, but with me, if i gave somebody a bloody nose in a fight they just came back with more and more friends untill i was unable to run away anymore without being circled and stamped on, let alone fight them, even when i had my own friends backing me up there was no way to deal with them all. my friend andy got suspended for pretty much saving my life, i was in the medical room after the incident i mentioned before and he came to see if i was alright- a group of the guys from before ran into the nurses office, shoved the fucking nurse onto the floor and started punching and kicking me in the corner when i already had cracked ribs (i found out later), a broken nose and a few broken fingers. andy is a sort-of gentle giant, and he absoulutely lost it and beat the tar out of two of them, and literally threw the rest out- school made sure he wasnt around the next day to save my ass when the ones who werent suspended first time came round to do it again. they kept giving us "stay away from them!" and "stop looking for trouble!!!!" , but all the lunch-time supervisors agreed it was pretty fucking obvious they were grouping up and walking around looking for our group. the school was aware but did fucking nothing. they even pelted 4 girls who hung out with us with rocks, and one of them said all they did was bring the guy to the medical room to show him the damage it did, and he laughed in her face, told her "cry more emo kid" and sauntered off.
