• Woman arrested for hit-and-run after her car calls police.
A Florida woman has been arrested for a hit-and-run accident in Port St Lucie, after her car called the police to report the collision. According to police, who say the 57-year-old driver hit a truck and a van before driving off, her car’s emergency assistance feature automatically called 911, reporting the accident and location. Local news reports say at least one victim of the accident, as well as the driver, ended up in hospital. An increasing number of cars have features which let them contact police in case of a collision, detected by monitoring internal systems such as airbags. Ford’s system, for instance, uses a connected mobile phone to call emergency services and “supply vital information, such as your GPS coordinates, in the event you do not know your location or you are not able to provide it yourself”. I'm afraid I can't do that.
That's rather intriguing, but I guess if you really slam the car with auto call enabled that badly i guess it isn't much of a shocker. Just wish cars would do this sort of thing for every "bump" like this, so hit and run cases like this won't go unchecked. Though I guess the repercussion of that, would be to make the sensors more sensitive to hits. It would be a massive waste of time for the car to call 911 for minor bumps.

That way you don't flood 911, but you also don't impede the usefulness of the service.
Should be mandatory in all cars.
Should be mandatory in all cars.
Exactly how do you propose we fund that for every single American?
Exactly how do you propose we fund that for every single American?
Make it a mandatory feature in cars? Like seatbelts, etc.
Exactly how do you propose we fund that for every single American?
Make it a requirement for new cars. EDIT: I was beaten.
What I want to know is how she managed to hit something hard enough to trigger that system, yet soft enough to not obliterate the vital systems on that car. Modern cars are about as tolerant to bumping into things as ancient vases and tend to just crumple up into a useless ball at the first sight of impact. By design, no less.
Make it a mandatory feature in cars? Like seatbelts, etc.
And then how are you going to get a $45,000 car into my driveway when a $4000 car is the max I can afford? And for that matter how ya gonna get me to drive it? 'Cause I don't want a modern car in the first place and ittl end up sitting in the driveway while I continue to drive my old pickup and my '99 P71. You gonna fund retrofits instead? Yeah that's a great idea, 'specially on my '85 F150 where I know what systems are necessary for it to run and can very easily just put an on/off switch for the new shit.
The good thing is that these features are mostly in expensive cars so there will be more rich dumb fucks who think they own the world getting caught by it. Getting hoist by their own petard and such :v:
How big of a piece of shit do you have to be to hit somebody and think, I'm gonna run the fuck away and leave them to potentially die.

They're not saying to make it the law, but rather a mainstay in new cars. Just like how you can't find a new car without Bluetooth
Should be mandatory in all cars.
a lot of new fords have this, my parents' focus and my friends fiesta both say that emergency assistance is turned on when you start the car
Uhh in that case pretty much every post 2012 car does??
plenty of people still drive around cars that are almost full-analog(and good job to them for maintaining them that well too). it'd be kind of weird for the government to try to subsidize those, especially if its like a family heirloom, just to replace it with cars that can be tracked. (which personally im fine with, i could give less of a shit about where the government knows i'm at. that can already be easily figured out with the trail of receipts everyone leaves around)

The post did not say that you were required to buy a new vehicle. Your post is a rant about nothing.
Should have put KITT instead of HAL in the OP actually
Should have put KITT instead of HAL in the OP actually
HAL is more ubiquitous, but I did consider Knight Rider.
Is this onstar? I work for them and it sounds alot like onstar [editline]8th December 2015[/editline]
What I want to know is how she managed to hit something hard enough to trigger that system, yet soft enough to not obliterate the vital systems on that car. Bluetooth connectivity in my dashboard will never get used. I don't answer the phone behind the wheel. Ever. I don't give a shit who's on the other end, if I'm driving it just rings and rings and rings. My phone is a dash cam when I'm on the road, it doesn't become a phone again until I'm parked, so unless I can bark orders at the dashcam software through the built-in handsfree I have no use of it. Matter of fact I don't even have bluetooth enabled on my phone right now. All I want is AM/FM, aircon, hydraulic power steering and a manual gearbox. Anything else can be left on the factory floor. I'll never use it I don't wanna pay for it. And it's 60% of why I like older cars so much, that's all they have. They're simple, honest, 'I exist to get you, a friend or three, and some cargo from A to B' machines.

Bluetooth is great for navigation. Can have the phone mounted on your dash and pipe the audio through your car speakers without a cable getting in the way. I only have an AUX port on my vehicle but I bought a bluetooth receiver that plugs into it just because it's so convenient. Only issue is that I can't use the dash or steering wheel buttons to control the music this way.

More or less. They need to stop playing Stressed Out by 21 Pilots, though, that song is shiiiiiiiiiit.
OnStar's implementation is better. They have an operator call in and ask "hey, your car/truck reported a crash, are you all alright?" and if they get a "yeah everything's cool" response, then they won't bother with calling 911. Ford apparently has a proprietary thing of their own, but the way they have it implemented, it would generate a lot of false positives, no?

Why not go old-school and go without the radio, without the fancy-pants aircon, go with unassisted steering for the most raw feel, and a manual gearbox without the synchromeshes? I eagerly await the day when a thread about cars can be posted here and TestECull won't go into a rant about how old cars = better and how he's such a manly man for driving cars with manual gearboxes. Reminds me of kids who listen to 80's music and complain they were 'born in the wrong generation' lmao

It's funny, I am an EE yet I absolutely have no need for the technology that companies keep cramming cars with and find it distracting. I will never go back to an auto trans and I don't even want a radio, just nice speakers. I exclusively listen to music that I have on my phone. Although, Bluetooth would be handy for controlling songs with my steering wheel since with the aux I have to mess with my phone if I want to change songs.

Retrofit?? I don't know the meaning. I love new standards and pushing the bar, but literally none of that applies to me, and I can't fathom any retrofitting on my own little piece of history. I feel like I was lucky enough to drive an automatic, rare enough in its era, with a cassette-to-3.5mm converter. Didn't know folks here were so vehement about vehicle standards though, or I might not have posted. Oh well v:v:v

I never even once said they were objectively better, merely that I preferred older ones and don't want a new one, so I don't get why your panties are in a twist yet again.
