The federal coalition will deliver a faster, better, cheaper national broadband network (NBN) to all Australians if it wins government, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says.
Mr Abbott launched the coalition's broadband policy in Sydney on Tuesday with communications spokesman Malcolm Turnbull.
"We believe in a national broadband network," Mr Abbott told reporters.
"We will deliver a better NBN."
Mr Abbott said if the coalition won government this year, users would be able to access a minimum download speed of 25 megabits per second (mps) by the end of its first term.
If it won a second term, the minimum speed would increase to 50mps for the vast majority of households.
While 25mps is about five times better than Australians get now, it's still well down on the average 100mps being promised by Labor.
But Mr Abbott said rolling out fibre optic cable to the node - or street corner - rather than all the way to the home or business as Labor would do, would be cheaper.
"We will build fibre to the node and that eliminates two thirds of the cost," Mr Abbott said.
"So we will be able to do this for under $30 billion, compared to the over $90 billion it will cost the National Broadband Network (under Labor)."
Mr Abbott also announced plans for three inquiries, including a commercial review to be completed within 60 days of the coalition winning office into how quickly the NBN builder can
meet coalition objectives.
There would also an audit into Labor's NBN "mess" and an independent study into Australia's broadband future needs, which would include a cost benefit analysis.
"I am very proud of this policy. I am confident that it gives Australians what they need," Mr Abbott said.
I.e: making you pay out the arse to companies to connect you to it
[editline]9th April 2013[/editline]
while not actually introducing anything faster than Labours current plan
The reason my internet is a piece of shit is because of access to the fucking node though.
So its slower and shitter
and effectively will not solve our internet problems
ok thanks abbott
Wouldn't it be unfair because some towns already have NBN hooked up and enjoying nice fast speeds that are way larger than this
The NBN has just begun construction in my area and is finishing in December last year and we have to renew our bigpond plan and we're really happy thats the case because we can get onto an NBN plan
And yet it's faster than my internet.
Hey, maybe this thread will give the filthy capitalists and assorted other people from other countries an idea of why always-online is a terrible idea, and just how great you have it up there.

this is better than what we currently have and a shit load less expensive than labours plan
the government has other priorities, but if you want fibre to your house so bad you can pay for it yourself.

Fiber Internet is vital for Australia to keep up in an ever changing world where we will be connected all the time, this is important to sustain our future
Abbott is such a knob.

The governments priorities are to ensure that the country runs smoothly and efficiently, abandoning infrastructure projects such as this really ignores how able we are to afford such projects and the benefits they will provide in the future. Placing the completion of a fibre network upon private companies will just mean the coverage will be non-universal and that rural people will get massively fucked over.
In short, the Coalitions plan is exclusively modeled to allow them to continue claiming they're reducing government spending at the expense of the Australian public. There's a reason they constantly get a surplus, because they pass the costs onto individuals while barely giving concessions back.
The NBN is inevitable, while Abbot will try slowing it down with his plan eventually it will be replaced as well (Even if the eventual result isn't called the NBN, FTTH is going to happen)
It will be interesting to see how much it ends up costing as well, since they've been claiming numbers that don't make sense (Like saying it's cheaper to buy the entire copper network, than to just use the same conduits, etc.)
Edit: Assuming there's a FTTC cabinet every 600m down the road, and everybody is migrated to VDSL2, then the speeds will be similar, so most people won't care. But replacing the copper with fibre wasn't wanted just for speeds, fibre is much more reliable and more resistent to the elements, etc.

they have to because labor puts us into debt

Debt in Australia is a complete non-issue at this point in time and for the foreseeable future.
We're doing good when it comes to money so i wouldnt worry about debt tbh

Says the qualified economist.
The NBN in it's present form isn't affordable. But we're fucked any way you look at it, FTTN may happen first and FTTH progressively from there. But as it stands FTTH is not feasible all in one go.
I hate it too.
I did business class for one year in grade 8
I'm pretty fucking qualified
According to the news, it sounds like they're planning to run plain ADSL2+ over it. Meaning that while the speeds may be more consistent than they currently are, they won't be providing much over the existing network.
Half the cost, 1/4th the capability.
They apparently neglected to even address what they'd replace Labor's WiMAX solutions for rural areas with.
I don't think they even have a rural component, they've been focusing solely on metropolitan areas since the NBN was originally announced (Back then the liberals wanted to run everything over wireless, which is even stupider than their current idea)
So, I will be going from getting 24Mbit, to getting 25Mbit.
Yes I know that most people can't get those speeds, but the fact is, we need to have the current plan for the NBN put in place still. Abbot is an idiot and has no idea of what needs to be put in place for Australia to be able to catch up with the rest of the world. We are far enough behind as it is, and the $30 million waste, will just be replaced by a better system within a few years anyway, spending yet more money. Better off spending $90 million on a more stable and future proofed network.
