Patches of the red algae, a natural phenomenon that can be exacerbated by certain weather conditions, have been sighted between Bondi Beach and Maroubra Beach this morning.

Waverley head lifeguard Bruce Hopkins said the bloom was spotted drifting off the north side of Bondi Beach at around 6.30am.
"It has got quite a fishy smell to it,'' Mr Hopkins told AAP.
"It can irritate some people's skin but generally not much more than that.''
Mr Hopkins said the bloom has a "reddy-purple'' tinge and sits on the surface like oil sheen.
The bloom was dissipating off Bondi, with hopes the beach might be reopened by this afternoon, he said.
Red algae was uncommon but not unheard of at Bondi, Mr Hopkins added.
At just before 12.30pm Beachwatch NSW announced that Clovelly Beach had also been closed because of the bloom.
The closures will come as a blow to tourists and other beachgoers if they continue throughout a week which is forecast to have soaring temperatures peaking at more than 40C on Saturday.
A Randwick Council spokesman said red algae can potentially be dangerous to humans exposed to it.
"There are some possible risks to human health from red algae including skin rashes and eye irritation, and for this reason the beach will remain closed until the algae dissipates,'' the spokesman said.
"Signage has been installed at Clovelly Beach, and council lifeguards are advising people not to swim.''

Surfs up!

That looks really fucking cool
that looks pretty metal
Huh, I've never before heard of this.
Looks like blood.
I bet this scared the shit out of people in ye olden days.

THE RISE OF THE FEARFUL BLOOD KRAKEN IS SOON TO COME
Looks like it's the beach's time of the month

It should scare you now, it means we'll be seeing more of this. It's toxic for people, it's toxic for land critters, and it's toxic for sea creatures!
No loss, Bondi is a terrible and overcrowded beach. People should rive the extra 30 minutes and go to a decent beach
When i looked at the pics in the OP, all i could think of, was the advert for Dethklok's new movie, Blood Ocean.
The rivers will run red with the blood of our enemies.
Shame this wasn't in the Red Sea.
Welp, I guess all I can say is get used to it. The warmer the oceans, the greater the frequency of both Red Tide and Yellow Tide.
That and jellyfish, which foul up propellers and kill local fish stocks. We're in for some bumpy years ahead of us.
Oh christ, it's the red weed!

Okay, who's using Hebrews for slave labor?
Algea! Hah, that's what the government wants you to think. This is what really happened:

It's the Second Impact!
BLOOD OCEAN.
Imagine wearing goggles and swimming in that.
I always thought that "Red Tide" would be a great name for a shitty horror movie.

It makes you smell like fish and is like swimming in poison ivy/oak.
Yeah, no.

RED TIDE"
EDIT:
Actually two movies by that name:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1742139/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0146212/ <- So shitty there's not even a synopsis.
Harvest that shit.
Make it into biofuels.
The first time I saw a picture of the effects of red algae without context I thought it was the worst dolphin slaughter ever.
I was relieved when I found out what it really was
it looks more like a large bowl of tomato soup to me
Happens every end of / beginning of year here.
And when that happens, seafood prices rise so high that eating any type of fish is considered luxurious.
