Owlboy is one of the best looking and sounding games in a while. This is pixel art is done right.
I'm not saying other pixel art in games is done poorly, but after a while, it does seem samey.
This really hit the nail on the head. I really wanted to emotionally invest in the game world, but a lot of the game play seems really juxtaposed.
I'd give it a try if you haven't already.
This is going to be a minority opinion but I think pixel art works well in smaller resolutions and also I don't find the BGs too impressive as the actual BGs themselves are boring subjects. Look up King of Fighters backgrounds for better examples of well done pixel art.

I mean it gets to a point where you may as well just animate sprites normally like what Lab Zero does with Skullgirls/Indivisible.

Other youtubers have started using them as well I'm pretty sure. I think LGR used it once.

They spent a lot of time on the art, that's about all the credit I can give it. But I don't really care how good your art looks if all you're drawing are fucking rocks.

Sums the game up pretty well. The art is gorgeous but actual gameplay and the world fall really flat. In a way this is Crysis of sidescrollers.
