A federal judge has thrown out a lawsuit by a creationism think tank and school that attempted to force the state of Texas to allow it to offer master's degrees in science education.
In 2008, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board rejected the Dallas-based Institute for Creation Research's application to offer master's degrees, which taught science from a biblical perspective. The institute's graduate school sued in 2009, claiming the board violated its constitutional right to free speech and religion.
'Disjointed, incoherent'
U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks of Austin found no merit in the institute's claims and criticized its legal documents as "overly verbose, disjointed, incoherent, maundering and full of irrelevant information."
In an e-mailed statement, school representatives said they were reviewing the decision and may appeal.
The National Center for Science Education, an Oakland, Calif.-based nonprofit that defends the teaching of evolution, cheered the decision.
"The Coordinating Board made a principled decision in the first place, and it is good to see it was upheld in a court of law," said Glenn Branch, the center's deputy director.
The Institute for Creation Research's graduate school, which is based in California, has been offering master's degrees in that state since 1981, according to its website. Aimed at aspiring Christian schoolteachers, the curriculum critiques evolution and champions a literal interpretation of the biblical account of creation.
Accredited in California
In California, the school is accredited by the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools, an agency that is not recognized in Texas.
To operate its graduate school in Texas, the institute needed preliminary approval from the Coordinating Board and accreditation from a regional body, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
The institute never got past its first hurdle.
After heated meetings packed with public speakers, board members denied the application.
"Religious belief is not science," Texas Commissioner of Higher Education Raymund Paredes said at the time. "Science and religious belief are surely reconcilable, but they are not the same thing."
See guys, Texas isn't completely retarded :frown:
Good.
This is a first, Texas being smart.
This is a first, Texas being smart.
Awww man c'mon, why you gotta do that, yes our faggots at the textbook department were retarded but why ya gotta bring down the entire state? I mean c'mon we invented the microchip and makes it possible for you to even be using a computer
Lol this degree is a joke.
I'm glad to see religion being properly separated from the education

Much like religion itself? :v:

Nice bias.
You effectively just said every religious person is incoherent, among other things. By extension, you're effectively also saying everyone with an opinion (besides your own) is incoherent as well.
In before shitstorm.
FFFFFFFFFFfffffffffff, above post ^

He said nothing about religious people.

you say we like it was a group effort...

No he didn't. He was saying that was true of religious teachings, not religious people.
You're a dumbass.

Calling someone a dumbass will effectively improve your argument, right?
Anyways, I'm religious, and I don't think religion belongs in teaching. religion only belongs in religion.
The cooler part about this is that the judge is a Texas-native. So, it is good to know that sensibility can be found in Texas.

derp :downs:
It puzzles me as to why people feel they need to defend a myth, as if its crucially important to their religion. And lots of these people aren't stupid, two of the best people at maths I know, are both creationists.
That's a good thing considering a masters in science based on creationism is equal to a postman being trained by Santa Claus.
A master degree in science based on creationism is gibberish. people need to split science and religion. you may live by gods rules at home, but we need you to live by those we all agree are best for us all. the best thing to do in this diverse world is just to keep to what we agree on.
Mythology /=/ science.

Read the bible litterally and your sould will be damned eternal in feuds concerning contradicting verses and all that. Read the bible as a myth and god may save your soul OR it may have turned out be just a story but you still lived a sensible, damn good, nonbiggoted life, didn't you?
Imagine if the Bible belt took the bible with just a grain of salt... They'd be just as sensible as all the other cool guys i know who believe in god.

He's making a goddamn joke.
Also, that's not bias that's opinion.
I call the shitstorm

It IS crucially important to their religion, but not their faith.
More people need to learn how to separate the two.

Yeah, he did seem to have a stick up his ass.
Nice. Now, if only they did something about their PUBLICLY FUNDED SCHOOLS pushing creationism garbage as science.

Here's the thing: they can't teach creationism, they can't teach atheistic evolution either.
They have to be fair to both beliefs. The deepest they can go is say evolution is what caused the earth to be made. They can't say that a god didn't make it happen, nor can they say one did.
I'm religious, but I agree, mixing it with science is not a good thing.

Evolution. Is. Not. A. Belief.
Evolution. Is. Not. A. Belief.
It's not worth arguing about.
Evolution. Is. Not. A. Belief.
Exactly. For example, I'm religious, but I believe evolution happened.
What IS a belief is atheism. Saying that evolution happened on its own and that no god exists is atheism, and shouldn't be taught. Just the same, teaching that a god did make the Earth shouldn't be taught either.
The curriculum should be unbiased to both sides.

Those. Are. Not. Complete. Sentences.

Atheism is a belief, but it isn't a true religious belief.
