So I have a Canon 60D, currently own a Canon 50mm F/1.8 II prime lens. For my birthday my Mum has offered to get me a new lens for my camera, since I am finding the 50mm on the crop sensor quite tight when trying to use it indoors. I was looking at getting the Sigma EX 30mm F/1.4, but from what I can google, it isn't helping me much.
I want something that has a fast aperture, and is 35mm or shorter. Budget isn't too much of a constraint, but not something very expensive ($1000+).
A friend of mine has recommended the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM for what I do, which is landscape and street photography. But I'm not too sure about how sharp it would be in comparison to a prime lens. If someone can also shed some light on this it would be much appreciated.
Feel free to recommend any other lenses as well.
I'm kind of in the same situation as you with my 500D (APS-C) I want a fast ultra wide angle prime. I would go for something 24mm and below, especially for landscapes you want an ultra wide angle (FF) lens with that 1.6 crop body.
I don't recommend the 17-40mm unless you have a Full Frame camera, it's a wide angle zoom and will not perform as well as a standard zoom (for instance, the 15-85 or 17-85 will both perform better and have better ranges). The sigma 30mm is a great lens, especially the art edition, and should give you a wider perspective and great sharpness. The canon 28mm 1.8 is another contender, it's not as good but will work on full frame if you ever go that route (would be fun on a film camera)

Won't be going for a full-frame camera for a while yet.
How much sharper would the Sigma 30mm be over the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II? What makes the 28mm f/1.8 not as good? Just trying to find out details and such.

The new Sigma 30mm Art version is much sharper than the old one, just make sure you get the new one since the old one was a bit shit. Thing is, 30mm isn't really that wide either, for indoor use.
The DSLR market doesn't really have many primes designed to be wide enough for shooting indoors for APS-C cameras so you're kind of stuck (part of why I jumped ship). I agree with Trog though, your best bet would probs be the 28mm 1.8.

The 28mm 1.8 is just not designed with the same goals as the 30mm 1.4 because they were designed for different image formats. The 28mm was made to be a fast wide angle on FF, while the sigma was designed to be a fast normal lens with the smaller image circle in mind, making it quite a bit sharper at larger apertures. The art version might be a bit sharper than the 50mm 1.8 when used wide open, but I'm not 100% sure on that (will be at least as good though).
The canon should be a little cheaper, and a lot of fun on a film camera. If the sigma was less I would certainly recommend it, and also if you demand the best wide open performance. The 2mm difference is pretty negligible.
Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8. Best bang for the buck and it's the best performing wide lens for crop sensored camera's with outstanding build quality.

forgot about this! if it's not too big and the price permits, this is the best thing you can get. will beat most primes at all apertures, and it's the only way to get wider than 24mm and still have f1.8 on APS-C cameras.

Holy shit, that looks awesome. I think this might be the one I will get. Very impressed by the reviews and sample images I've looked around.
Well, after spending quite a while researching lenses, trying them out (Including the sigma 18-35 F/1.8). Just ordered the Sigma 18-35, the quality was absolutely amazing, well outperformed my 50mm F/1.8 and even the Sigma 30 F/1.4 in my eyes.
Now the wait for it to arrive..
Congrats.
I really want that lens.
I hope there will be a full format version some time.

Probably not anytime soon because it's the smaller sensor size that made it possible.

Sigma is rumored to be working on a 24-70mm f2. That's a lens I would buy so quickly
