From Wired
If educators in New Mexico want to teach evolution or climate change as a “controversial scientific topic,” a new bill seeks to protect them from punishment. House Bill 302, as it’s called, states that public school teachers who want to teach “scientific weaknesses” about “controversial scientific topics” including evolution, climate change, human cloning and — ambiguously — “other scientific topics” may do so without fear of reprimand. The legislation was introduced to the New Mexico House of Representatives on Feb. 1 by Republican Rep. Thomas A. Anderson. Supporters of science education say this and other bills are designed to spook teachers who want to teach legitimate science and protect other teachers who may already be customizing their curricula with anti-science lesson plans. “These bills say, ‘Oh we’re just protecting the rights of teachers,’ which on the face of it isn’t wrong. But they draw big red circles around topics like evolution and climate change as topics to be wary about,” said Joshua Rosenau, a policy and projects director at the National Center for Science Education. “It suggests this kind of science is controversial, and would protect teachers who want to teach anti-evolution and climate-change-denying lessons in classrooms.”
More info at the source http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2011/02/new-mexico-science-education/ :smith:
Human cloning is a odd addition.
I think creationists and evangelists lack the mental capacity to make informed decisions.
Introduced by republicans. Why am I not surprised.
Anyone who doesn't believe in Evolution in one way or another has a sever cranial-rectal inversion. AKA:
Oh gods, that bumper sticker...I don't know what to say.
Is human cloning really common in New Mexico or did I miss something?
I know climate change may be a controversial scientific topic but evolution sure as hell isn't.
I know climate change may be a controversial scientific topic but evolution sure as hell isn't.
climate change really isn't either
Remember how they said conservatives are brain damaged? This really makes it seem true.
I didn't know new mexico was into this kind of things...
Is human cloning really common in New Mexico or did I miss something?
AREA 51, man! :tinfoil:
AREA 51, man! :tinfoil:
Area 51 is in Nevada.
Teachers should be able to teach whatever they want to as long as they also teach what the school requires. The schools should NOT prevent what the teachers can teach, at least when it comes to science.
Area 51 is in Nevada.
Oh, I'm thinking of Roswell then. I need to brush up on my conspiracy theories.
I know climate change may be a controversial scientific topic but evolution sure as hell isn't.
Climate change isn't a controversial scientific topic. Most, if not all, scientists agree that global warming is man-made. The only "debate" there is, is between scientists and conservative nut-jobs.
I know climate change may be a controversial scientific topic but evolution sure as hell isn't.
the scientific consensus is that climate change exists and it is anthropogenic
At first I thought this was regarding College classes such as 'Paranormal and Mythology" but when I saw it mocking evolution I was like, "Really?"
What exactly is that bumper sticker trying to say? That we should ignore facts and live in ignorance?
That sticker is so stupid, it's not even funny.
We're going to be seeing a lot more of these because of the recent successes of the GOP in state/federal elections. Every single one of them will get struck down, but hey that's never stopped them from trying has it?
If the teachers can't or won't teach the material they are required to teach they should be fired
is there something in the water? there seems to be a lot of stupid going around lately.
I like New Mexico
Wow, what the hell is wrong with these people.
What kind of crap is this?
I was thinking that this was a new bill in Mexico and wasn't surprised but then I read the article and realized this was New Mexico and shit everywhere America what the fuck are you doing lately
That bumper sticker. Irony overload.
