The BBC has lost a legal fight to stop publication of a book which reveals the identity of Top Gear's driver The Stig.
The High Court in London refused to grant the BBC an injunction blocking the publication by HarperCollins of an autobiography that unmasks the character on the BBC Two show.
The BBC began legal action against HarperCollins last week.
The case took place behind closed doors. The author's identity has not been disclosed.
The BBC argued that the planned book would breach confidentiality obligations.
Last week, HarperCollins said it would "vigorously defend" its right to publish the book, adding it was "disappointed that the BBC has chosen to spend licence fee payers' money to suppress this book".
However Top Gear executive producer Andy Wilman attacked the publisher, writing on the Top Gear website that the BBC had a right to protect Stig's anonymity "from a bunch of chancers" who were "hoping to cash in on it".
The BBC has never confirmed the identity of The Stig - who test drives cars on the show. It maintains that unmasking him would spoil viewers' enjoyment.
I think he should be allowed, but I agree with the BBC saying that it might spoil it a bit if viewers know his identity.
The Stig isn't the interesting part of Top Gear anyway.
It's cool, but it's not what makes the show.
so are they going to fire him? Sure a guy should be able to write a book but if we know the identity of the Stig then it's a bit silly
And so white Stig dies...
Bring on pink Stig!
We need a black stig along with the white one, he could be like the stig's arch nemesis
Someone would complain about political correctness... it's always the way.
I don't really care who the Stig is. It won't be very revolutionary if I find out, and he'll still be a good racing driver.

There was a Black Stig, he died :( (not in real life)
He should have shown up in the court room as The Stig, then BBC would've won.
I honestly don't care if we know his identity.
Black Stig should play rap/rnb etc.
I think the book will be really interesting.
First there was Black Stig
Then there was White Stig
Next...Grey Stig?
What makes me laugh about all of this is although this bloke can now release his book, he'll most likely be out of the job as soon as it's released.
Is this like the guy on Deal or No Deal who hides in that dark room?
Rainbow Stig next.

Click for the picture.
They launched the Black Stig off of an aircraft carrier, they'll probably just shove this guy into the Reliant Robin-rocket and replace him.
Some say it's impossible for him to wear socks, and he can open a beer bottle with his testes.
All we know is that he's called The Stig
I'd let them cross examine my stig. :smug:

But to be politically correct there would then have to be a mexican stig too. And a gay stig.

My god that would be awesome, stig races and shit anyone?

What about woman stig?
Did he ever sign a contract stating he couldn't reveal his identity?

Yeah he did.

He's almost certainly lost his place on the BBC show after showing his identity.
I vote pink stiggy next.
HarperCollins
Lol at when they sack him.
Rainbow stig!
The show is funny because of Jeremy, Richard and James.
Not because of The Stig.
In my opinion, The Stig isn't a very important part of the show, but he's cool.

he may not be what make top gear great, but he's certainly pretty a important part of top gear's identity.
Disappointing, but they will get a new stig regardless. The black stig was fired for revealing his identity, won't be surprised if this guy is now out of a job.
