EU Parliament's president calls to suspend the EU-USA free trade agreement talks
Martin Schulz, the president of the European Parliament, has joined a growing group of German politicians calling for a suspension of European Union free-trade talks with the United States following reports that US intelligence tapped the mobile phone of Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Schulz, from Germany's opposition Social Democrats, said that he spoke as a supporter of transatlantic free trade in calling for a suspension.
Using an embargo of sorts as leverage is quite a good play on the EU's part.
Somebody needs to show USA it's place, finally.
Erm...EU..you should maybe do a little homework first. Suspending that means quite a steep price hike in a lot of goods. Most notably cars, since it's cheaper to build them here and ship them there. It will have fuck all of an effect on us, though.
Your move, EU. We'll just laugh.

Because the US gets absolutely nothing from the EU?
I doubt that.

This is why people find Americans to be ignorant. Where in your mind does it cross that an embargo from the EU against the US is a good thing.
-misread thread, drown me in dumbs-

Erm... We're not in a free trade agreement with the US yet, that's what these talks are to meant to create.
Good thing Canada and the EU just signed a free trade deal!
so maybe now the asswipes on capital hill can stop defending the NSA and maybe the president will have to stop lying about what the NSA does and how effective it is.

its not an embargo its a withdrawl from free trade negotiations, its not going to do us any difference but it will put pressure on the hill to do something about the rogueish nature of the NSA and end FISA
This is fucking ridiculous.
We're all going to financially starve to death because our government is fucking retarded and can't stop shoving their cock into other countries cookie-jars.

You think the US would be talking about a free trade deal if they got nothing out of it?

Haha, you're really overestimating the amount of stuff the USA produces.
I can't believe out of all the thing to mention you went for the cars, pretty much one of EU's specialties.
Oh man, the NSA is just an absolute diplomatic liability at this stage.

If anything, then the US has started importing more European cars than it exports to EUrope.
Oh, and BTW, Ford's Euro division operates almost entirely separately from the US division.
Does anyone know where I could find a comparison of U.S. -> E.U. imports and vice versa? If such a thing exists.

Hell, Ford has a plant even here in Romania. The US imports even some of it's own brand.
An embargo? Hell no, awful idea. But suspending the free trade agreements I can see, our government really needs to stop this.

Probably mean something like this?

Funny, because the USA imports much more from the EU than the EU imports from the USA. (See link above)

Neither of us really will be laughing

That's good, thanks.

We would all be crying.

Ha, K, we'll just buy some Mercedes, Jaguars, volkswagens, vauxhalls, BMW's, Audis, Toyotas, Mitsubishi's, Daewoos.
Of course there's all the other car manufacturers I don't even recall right now.
Your move I guess, since you've severely over estimated how important US trade is to the EU.
That's good, thanks.

Wasn't meant to be taken seriously.
But yeah, probably, but the EU less than the USA I guess.

Suspension of trade between the U.S. and Europe would be a living nightmare. It is probably the worst possible thing that could happen to the world economy.

Nah that would probably be China for some reason no longer exporting materials or products.
It's not like the USA are exempt from globalization, of course hurting oversea relationships will have a notable impact on their industry.
My question is how the rest of the EU will respond to this move, considering the president from Germany reacted to a German scandal when he's supposed to act for the EU. Not sure how much he may meddle in national affairs before people wonder about his sense of judgment.
Worst case scenario he's shot down so hard it causes internal dissent (which could have an effect on the already publicly criticized Euro) and sends the opposite message they were hoping for.
I may just be reading into this too much.

The NSA has managed to piss off Germany and France, two massive key players in the EU, along with other member states. He's most likely got the entire union's backing.
I wish my already struggling family wasn't dragged into every political dispute as leverage.

we don't make much export when compared to other countries
Brinkmanship. Ballsy move by the EU.
