• People tricked into thinking they occupy 3D simulations using VR

The Mail dress it up with some spiritulaist bollocks. Bolded important parts. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1357889/Real-life-avatars-prove-body-experiences-tricks-confused-mind-scientists-say.html
Some have reported floating towards bright lights, while others claim to have seen their bodies lying on hospital beds below them. And most will tell you they have been through the most spiritual of occurrences. But out of body experiences are nothing more than the trick of a confused mind, according to evidence from an extraordinary study. Using virtual reality visors, scientists have been able to fool the brains of volunteers into temporarily believing they occupied a 3D computer-generated character. The peculiar sensations they described mirrored the feelings of those who reported an out of body experience.Swiss neuroscientist Professor Olaf Blanke, a world authority on consciousness, claims the results show that out of body experiences are the result of temporary glitches in perception. He said: ‘Instead of it being a spiritual thing, it is the brain being confused.’ The researchers immersed volunteers in a computer-generated landscape through a virtual reality visor. The participant could see a 3D room occupied by a human-looking figure – known as an avatar – who mimicked their posture and movements. The volunteer also wore a skullcap fitted with electrodes to monitor brain activity. During one experiment, the volunteer was stroked on the arm with a baton, while a computer-generated stick stroked the arm of the avatar. Incredibly, the volunteer was so immersed in the virtual world that for a few moments they believed they were ‘occupying’ the avatar – rather than their own body. The electrodes picked up activity in parts of the brain which Professor Blanke had established in previous research were linked to out of body experiences. In another test, the volunteers stood in front of a screen showing an avatar with its back turned. Again, when the scientists touched the volunteer while simultaneously ‘touching’ the avatar with a computer-generated baton, the volunteers reported an out of body experience.
Holy shit.
I want to try this now.
And more evidence comes down hard on spirituality(as a concept of "out of body"ness). [editline]18th February 2011[/editline] and also, holy shit when can I have this for modern video games?
I'm confused
Would love some sort of game like this.
:damn: [editline]18th February 2011[/editline] That's pretty damn interesting, to say the least
Fucking Ghost in the Shell. Hot damn this next century is going to be fun.
Today, virtual stroking. Tomorrow, virtual stroking :q:
I can't wait until we get third-person view on real life
Would love some sort of game like this.
No. No you wouldn't. Because if you got killed in the game, YOU'D FUCKING DIE.
No. No you wouldn't. Because if you got killed in the game, YOU'D FUCKING DIE.
People with a weak heart, maybe. A healthy human being? Doubtful. Stress can kill a person, but that's a long process in which the heart slowly breaks down and stops functioning properly, not an instant reaction.
In before some stupid twat goes "LOL DIS DISPROVE RELIGIN OCNE ADN FOUR ALL!! :downs: I WONDER HOW RIGHTWING NUTJOB FRUITBAR LOLDURAMERIKUH STOOPID AMIRICUNTZ WILL AHDNLE DIS?1??11 :downs: :downs:" and starts a war in this thread. Now, maybe I'm just being a skeptic, but I don't think you can really consider this conclusive of anything regarding the truth behind spirituality. They didn't disprove OOB experiences - all they proved was there are other things like OOB experiences. That's a bit like the following argument: 1. My heartrate increases when I am fearing for my life. 2. My heartrate increases when I am sexually excited. .: 3. Sexual excitement is fearing for my life. Just because two things are similar doesn't really disprove one or the other. In effect, this study doesn't disprove OOB experience - all it proves is that a confusion of the brain can create the same effects as an OOB experience. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Like I said, maybe it's just me being a skeptic.

Also I don't think even the mentally ill spell that poorly.
whoa this sound awesome. Who here saw Avalon (2001)? Because I really would love to play some fucking Avalon.
I can't wait to see where gaming has come in the next 10-20 years.
I also like it when I come up with thoughts like this and somebody tests them. The thought in particular was that you could give a person the sensation of being somewhere they aren't through a form of virtual reality and they wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I get out of body experience at times due to epilepsy. I hate it.
Guys, they didn't realize they were getting stroked with a REAL baton while their avatar was getting stroked with a virtual one on screen. This isn't real VR.
You are now imagining playing Amnesia with this Receive psycologist therapy for the rest of your life
I can't wait to see where gaming has come in the next 10-20 years.
A VR MMO set in WW2, where all of facepunch can join in at the invasion of Normandy

Play Fallout 3, enter Vault 87. Permanent psychiatrist sessions every week.
Hurrah, the power of the VR helmet is finally realized after more than 15 years of obscurity. It's a damn good thing I kept my Forte VFX1.

Like I said, maybe it's just me being a skeptic.
There is no spiritual explanation for an out of body experience. It is all in your head. It is your mind becoming confused with what is "Me". Also, your metaphor is a fallacy. The areas of the brain stimulated during an OOB experience are the same as the ones stimulated during this induced OOB experience. Therefore, it IS an OOB experience, as all an OOB experience ever is is a specific stimulation within your brain.
Vault 112 is coming?
