The streaming video company said Monday that it planned to increase subscription prices for new customers by one or two dollars a month within the next few months. Existing subscribers will be able to continue at their current rate "for a generous time period,"Netflixsaid.U.S. streaming subscribers currently pay $7.99 a month, a plan introduced back in 2010. The company raised monthly fees for new subscribers in Ireland by one euro back in January, a change that it said had "limited impact."
"If we want to continue to expand, to do more great original content... we have to eventually increase prices a little bit," Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said in a conference call with analysts Monday.
hopefully it means we get new content on top of the originals.

yea. and also have's anyone watched From Dawn Till Dusk(Netflix.?)
I bet this is thanks to net neutrality ending and Comcast forcing Netflix to shell out extra money for using their insane bandwidth.
I don't really mind if we keep getting shows like Orange is the New Black and House of Cards.
I'm pretty sure I read in other sources that the price increase would be for new subscribers only. Current ones stay at the $7.99.

Ah yeah: http://www.neowin.net/news/netflix-to-raise-streaming-video-prices-for-new-members
I'm okay with this, Netflix is a great service, and it's very well worth $8 or $10 a month
They could even bump it up to $15 monthly and it would still be worth it, if you compare it to the cost of going to a theater, buying dvds, or even paying for on-demand tv.
They only paid 8$ in the US? Here in Norway the service has been 13$ for as long as I can remember.
I really hope they use this increase in subscription to barter for new content faster, such as the latest seasons shortly after they end. I love how they funded the 4th season of Arrested Development as a Netflix exclusive, and I really enjoyed Orange is the New Black.
They're going to /have/ to do this to cover royalty fees from movies and other stuff.
I still feel like it's a bargain; I've pretty much replaced television with it entirely.

Literally the first sentence of OP:

Still better than paying for a cable bill.
two whole dollars? Boycott Netflix. I'll watch traffic for free. House of Cars. Fuck capitalism.
I'm convinced Netflix is one of the best things I've tried ever. Never would have discovered or ever seen Fringe, Continuum, Warehouse 13, Lost Girl and various other shows and movies without it since I only have Freesat, where in comparison finding anything other than old and finished American shows like Angel/Buffy/Stargate is impossible if you're looking for such American shows.
When you think it's advertisment free, and 24/7 access, it's an incredible deal. So to be fair, I think it has been too cheap for a while, atleast in the US.
yea. and also have's anyone watched From Dawn Till Dusk(Netflix.?)
Yeah man, it's amazing the implementation, I'm just a little confused how are they gonna manage to do the details that differ from the movie.
Wonder what they say for us. Currently we are paying around $7.60.
Meanwhile, my parents just subscribed to HBO and CineMax...
off topic when is Archer Season 5 coming Netflix( almost done 2 episode left of 4.)
They're going to /have/ to do this to cover royalty fees from movies and other stuff.
Well, they could keep it the same amount, but it would eat into their profits. Most companies like to see their profits grow, so the price increases.

Not a Comcast subscriber already? Congratulations, you are now!

A couple weeks after Season 6 starts.
Bullcrap. Give Canadians the full access that the US has and then we will talk subscription increases.

Put some actual movies in now
Still better than paying for a cable bill.
Hell when I moved into my first apartment back in july, I didn't even get cable, I got the fastest internet in the area, And Netflix. and that's what a lot of my friends are doing
Shouldn't prices go down the more people subscribe?
I feel like they're making enough money as it is to cover the costs but they're going to increase subscription prices anyway because why not, greed.
I've never payed for a subscription to Netflix and definitely won't after this, why should the little man have to pay the extra costs?
So they have a very limited quality selection.
They cut the services in half, from $9.99 for DVD+streaming to $7.99 for either.
Now, they still, after two or more years, don't have anything new for the increase in price/decrease in service, want to increase costs?
Yea, makes me sorry I ever came back to them this year after they pulled that shit a couple years back.

Well like the others said, royalties + death of net neutrality = higher prices.

Because more users totally don't increase the costs to run the service, right?
I've only had Netflix for a month, but it's been amazing so far. They have pretty much every show I've ever wanted to watch. I've always wanted to watch Lost, but never had the ability to, and they have every season in HD. They recently added House M.D as well, so I'm rewatching that as well.
They've got Hannibal, The Walking Dead, a whole bunch of great movies both classical and new...
I love it. I'd gladly pay more for the service, even as an "old" subscriber.
Hope they don't raise the prices here, it's already $15
