The appearance of these new islands has happened suddenly and is a dramatic new move in a longstanding territorial struggle in the South China Sea.
At the beginning of this year, the Chinese presence in the Spratly Islands consisted of a handful of outposts, a collection of concrete blockhouses perched atop coral atolls.
Now it is building substantial new islands on five different reefs.

Probably gonna waste lots of resources to wreck the environment of that sea just so they can have some petty territory THAT THEY ARE NOT ENTITLED TO.

Well, it's not as if the natural environment of the area would be preserved anyway, if China somehow succeeded. The reason they're interested in the territory because it's hypothesized that there are huge oil and gas reserves there.

The earth is pretty big, it can manage.

I wouldn't consider myself a environmental person generally, but holy shit, this is a dumb fucking attitude
Interesting read.
The format was annoying though. Well done, but annoying. Could have been the slow panning images, the wacky placement of it all. Probably just cause I am used to blocks of text with a single inserted image or linked album. I hope whatever the design of that page is called goes away.
Also, dick move, China.

It will manage, we might not.

The lithosphere will be fine. Sort of.
But not the biosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere. Ya know, the important bits where the only known life forms in the universe exist. They're straight up fucked.
Earth can survive, not like we can destroy the planet. however we are likely to kill off most life before we would become extinct. If we don't change our ways that is

I thought the format was quite nice actually, makes a decent change from the standard 'image followed by wall of text' format
This militaristic states thing is getting really fucking old.

I'm 100% sure our gigantic planet can handle these tiny islands.
I wasn't talking about every environmental hazard ever, just the one in this topic.
Jesus you guys.

well it technically is well within our technical grasp to destroy the planet, just lob a few asteroids at it, break up the moon, atomic weapons, artificial runnaway greenhouse effect. we really would be hard pressed to do anything but usher in a new mass extinction event and setup the earth for the next set of inhabitants, i'm thinking since reptiles, birds, mamals and fish have all had their mass ages it'll be fungus people next

there's massive methane deposits at the bottom of the area in question, building things near by and drilling for oil under them could heat them up and release massive amounts of methane into the atmosphere destroying any chances of combating global warming

seriously
On top of a white concrete blockhouse a soldier is standing looking back at us through binoculars.
I urge the skipper to get even closer, but a volley of flares erupts in the sky – it is a Chinese warning.
like what can a fishing boat possibly do against tons of construction crews?
[editline]9th September 2014[/editline]
plus they have no warning or signage, or even any reason to stay away since it is international water

Are you sure there is?
But a recent study by the US government suggests the main oil and gas reserves under the South China Sea do not lie anywhere near the Spratly Islands.
I can appreciate the change, and it was put together well. Didn't seem glitchy and has a polished feel to it.
Something about it distracted my eyes though. I'm pretty sure it's me being used to the same stuff for decades. I'm going to look into more to see if I can identify exactly what bugged me about it.
(Watch as I become a fan of the style and rail against the status-quo of block text.)
