See what I’m doing? See it? That most basic option we’ve all so desperately wanted from Steam for as long as it’s existed? Well, you can do it too, if you twiddle with the current beta. You may well remember Alec found a neat third-party app that let you do this. Well now it can be done using just Steam itself. It’s a fiddle at first, but once done you’re set. First of all, you’ll need to be in the Steam beta. To get there you need to run Steam, click on the file menu option Steam, then pick Settings. In there, you’ll see “CHANGE…” under “Beta participation”. Click on that, and opt into the beta. It’ll automatically restart, but when it’s done you’ll want to quit out completely. Now you need to add a switch to the Steam shortcut. So find the icon, Start menu option or whatever shortcut you use to load it, right click on it, and choose Properties. In there you’ll see the path it loads from looking something like this:
C:\Steam\Steam.exe
You want to add “-dev” to it, after a space, so it looks like this:
C:\Steam\Steam.exe -dev
Run that, and now you’ll see an extra page option, on the right after NEWS, called CONSOLE. Click on that one, and then type the following into the text field:
install_folder_ui
Hit return and it’ll give you a window that looks like this:

Choose “Add install folder”, and pick another place where you’d like to install Steam games. And you’re done! Now, whenever you attempt to install a game using the new file system (pretty much anything recent, and many will update), when you choose to install you’ll have a dropdown box offering any of the folders you’ve set via the console option. It works. I tried it.
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/09/11/finally-an-in-built-way-to-choose-steam-install-locations/ Garry needs to bring back RPS
Its beautiful
Oh thank god. Had a 500GB external harddrive, empty, with my internal having 6gb left.
Delivering the future of yesterday, today
HOLY SHIT FUCKING FINALLY
Took them long enough. Too long. I took matters into my own hands; I bought a new hard drive two months ago because I couldn't fit all my games on my C drive.
Took long enough for someone to figure this out, 500 mb free on my main partition :pwn:
Cool, now I just need to get an external hard drive to put my new stuff on it.
Just install steam in the hard drive with the most space, problem solved. Why would you need to scatter your games between drives?
I read over at RPS that it's already been possible with some tricks, but it's nice to see they're FINALLY patching in such a basic option. Better late than never I guess. Also I fully agree with swapping ShackNews with RPS again. I actually kinda have to thank Facepunch for getting rid of the RPS bot since it made me RSS-subscribe to them, and oh what wonders I discovered that way. SSD people will be jizzing.
SSD.
Outside of games you play a ton (like, at least every day), you shouldn't really be worrying about installing them on a SSD anyway. So the largest hard drive thing is still valid.
now fix offline mode (and before anyone says "ur jsut not useuing it rite," if you don't have an internet connection and you try to start steam it'll give you an option to start in offline mode, it's just broken)
it's always worked fine for me when i didn't have internet and started steam
it tells me "CAN'T CONNECT TO STEAM NETWORK ALERT ALERT DEFCON 1 DING DING DING" every single time I guess I'm in the minority because every time I post about it I'm flooded with dumbs and people telling me I'm somehow using it wrong

Still worked.
Nice, goodbye mklink.
double post
it's always worked fine for me when i didn't have internet and started steam
you need to login to an online server to use offline mode that's the problem anyway holy shit steam had a console?

going to buy a 500gb portable HD later, now i can play my games everywhere thanx
As far as I can tell, Offline mode breaks if steam knows about an update and then you close steam then the next time it starts up it wants to update but cant connect and goes ape shit.
i remember when games use to be 2 to 5 gbs big, nowadays there about 10 to 25 gbs
i remember when games use to be 2 to 5 gbs big, nowadays there about 10 to 25 gbs
dude, half life is only, what, 36mb? ok, with all the mods I have included it's around 2.5gb but yeah steam fortress is starting to get a bit silly ...who am i kidding, it was always silly. that's why i quit playing it
i remember when games use to be 2 to 5 gbs big, nowadays there about 10 to 25 gbs
It saddens me when a multi-platform game is <6GB on pc. I WANT GOOD TEXTURES DAMNIT.
going to buy a 500gb portable HD later, now i can play my games everywhere thanx
Forget that, I'm going to buy a 1tb portable. Better safe than sorry, better safe than sorry, better safe than sorry, better safe than sorry...
