Wondering about what kind of car to get? Whether you should buy something that's caught your eye? Post it here and we'll give you feedback.
Chevrolet Astro, or a Jeep Cherokee? :buddy:
I dunno bro, Astro is a cool van, not gonna lie. Then again, I am biased against Jeep after encountering tons of electrical problems on all Jeeps I've worked on @_@
I think I might have to go for Astro... not that that is a bad thing :buddy: Dad (who has worked alot with cars and he got much experience) says that Cherokee has a high insurance price and is kinda hard to get cheap parts to here in Norway and that the Astro has lower insurance price and cheap and easier to get parts. Cherokee is my favorite but I guess it'll have to wait a few years :saddowns:
Cherokee is the worst about electrical problems... As far as I've seen. If you can get ahold of an Astro AWD... Do it. :D
something reliable, cheap to run/insure and moderately cool looking would be great. suggestions?
something reliable, cheap to run/insure and moderately cool looking would be great. suggestions?
usa/can or europe [editline]11th January 2011[/editline] either way answer is honda civic
canada and thanks ill give it a look
This friday, will have around $400 Have a 1990 Mazda 323 with some roof-top clearcoat failure and some dents and scratches (Only one major dent, only an aesthetic issue.) Automatic transmission, transmission works great. Makes a 'clicking' noise when turning right, sounds like it might be old/dry CV joints. Heat and everything still works. Would I be able to get a significantly better car? Originally bought the 323 for $500 and I'm guaranteed to sell it for $500 (Mom is willing to buy it for Sister) http://www.usedvictoria.com http://victoria.kijiji.ca http://victoria.en.craigslist.com Would it be worth buying a car this friday? Should I wait? Ask parents to lend some money? (Unlikely)
get a job and buy a new car next summer or something you're not going to get a much better car with $900 [editline]11th January 2011[/editline]
canada and thanks ill give it a look
what's your budget?
get a job and buy a new car next summer or something you're not going to get a much better car with $900 [editline]11th January 2011[/editline] what's your budget?
Well, I have a job which is why I'll have $400 friday. I can definitely save up more but the problem is, the heat in my car isn't all that great, it has some problems that I can't afford to fix (If the CV Joints need fixing, that will easily cost $300+ which is nearly as much as the car cost) and it's starting just to get more and more problems. I just want to get a car that can drive without being more hassle than not. I'm trying to decide if I could sell the car for more than $500 and get something like a nice Mazda 626 or Civic for $1200. I know my friend got a damn nice 1992 Honda Civic LX for only $1500 so $1200 isn't all that unreasonable. I figure if I could get $700 for the car, or even $800, plus the $400 that's $1200. If I can get some money from my mom, that would add up to maybe $1400 or $1500. Which is certainly able to get a decent car if you look at usedvictoria for $1000-$1650 (You can usually talk people down, depending how long the ad has been up) Edit: Plus, looking at the cars in the $300-$900 price range, I don't see anything as mechanically sound as my car. The CV Joints make some sounds but there's a multitude of things it could actually be and it's been like that for a while. Meanwhile, the transmission DOES NOT slip (A common issues with older automatics that are cheap) and the bonus is that it only has 218k. Other cars in the price range have around 240-310k Oh, and haha. I'm looking at a 1989 Volvo 740 Turbo on Usedvictoria, the person lists "approximately 300k" and it says 331k on their pic of the speedo. That's a lot more! I'm really just asking someone else to look at the cheap cars on UsedVictoria and give me their opinion on what I could get for my car. So far, I'm just looking at other cars around the price and some listings include "needs transmittion work (Yeah, they mispelt transmission)" "runs fine but oil leak on passenger side dont know where oil leaked into alternator so alternator doesnt work"
dude 300k is nothing on a 740 how much is that?
$600, says it needs a windshield wiper motor and some TLC. I don't want a wagon though.
$600, says it needs a windshield wiper motor and some TLC. I don't want a wagon though.
no, you do want a wagon those volvos are built like fucking tanks with good maintenance, you can easily get another 75-100k out of that puppy wagons are awesome, and with more weight over the rear wheels, you'll get somewhat better performance too [editline]11th January 2011[/editline] plus tarbo
what's your budget?
Don't really know as it's a few months away, maybe ~3000
3,000 pound wagon with 160 hp = awesome

I wouldn't really feel comfortable driving a gigantic wagon, I just want a reliable daily driver (Mechanically sound, working heat/defrost) and preferably doesn't look like ass (Dents, Scratches, Rust). I wouldn't really mind my car except it looks pretty ugly (IMO) and it has some problems that bother me.
Don't really know as it's a few months away, maybe ~3000
yeah, a used honda or toyota is the car for you something like this http://wad20.wantaddigest.com/forsale/item.asp?&adclass2=Cars&headsub=1997%20ACCORD%20LX&category=Honda&onlineid=AOQJK03&adid=A00252 [editline]11th January 2011[/editline]
I'm a 17-year old. I've got room for all the friends/shit I want.

Here, I got another year and a bit (at least) before I can even carry more than one passenger and that's if I pass my Class 5 road-test. So, the back-seats are always available for stuff. I don't want a gigantic vehicle because I'm still a new driver and I'd be way more likely to back into/hit something.
>year and a bit (at least) before I can even carry more than one passenger You sound like you could use a beater CRX.
>year and a bit (at least) before I can even carry more than one passenger You sound like you could use a beater CRX.
None around in Victoria, and I'm preferably looking for an automatic. All the CRX's I could find in Vancouver were 5-speed.
Crazy, most of them here are automatic. People want to pawn them off on teens who can't convert them to 5 speed or drive stick yet.
I'm still a new driver and I'd be way more likely to back into/hit something.
If you have that kind of attitude, yeah. Wagon's are really not that huge. If I had to buy a smaller car, had money, and didn't have my Explorer, I would probably buy a Volvo XC70 like Prima's in a heartbeat. The thing looks awesome. Not to mention that driving a bigger car will probably make you more careful in the process.
Currently for sale near me there is A 3000GT A Acura TL A Chevy Tracker A Faguar hoping that the tracker is in my price range, gave up on the faguar, i dont want to pay maintenance out the ass TLs are c00l. the 3000gt looks like shit what do?
If the 3000GT is a twin turbo model and has been well looked after then that would be the best of the bunch... Under 6 seconds to 60, 4 wheel drive, loads of electronic traction gizmos to play with and fairly reliable. As I said, only bother looking at it if you know it's been well looked after and is in good condition, otherwise you'll have yourself a money pit.

Expensive to repair stuff and not easy to work on. Great for a weekend car but not a daily driver. I'd get the TL.

Checked out a few SL500's the other day. The first one was a white '96 with 80k miles, $9000. The guy had said it was in perfect shape. We get to his place and he pulls up in it and the paint it glorious, but then he opens the door.. the interior was ratty as hell. We take it for a drive and the transmission has a nasty whine and made a bad thud when it shifted, not to mention it refused to downshift sometimes. Obviously that was a waste of my life. So I get on craigslist and find another '96 in red with 75k for $13,000. I drive to the dealer it's at and it is in perfect shape except for the fact the front bumper had been repainted. $13,000 was too much for a '96 and more than I could afford so now I have my sights set on this one: http://stlouis.craigslist.org/ctd/2153917675.html I'm hoping to talk it down to at least $12,000.
