We're here at the Tesla Design Studio in Los Angeles, where Elon Musk just unveiled his startup's third vehicle: an SUV it calls the Model X. The 'ute sports some rather unique looking double-hinged "falcon wing" rear doors which it make loading people and things easier as you reach into the car, not over it. According to Musk they'll open in tighter spots than a traditional door, opening high enough to fit even a standing human. Powered by an AWD variant of the Model S drivetrain, despite the larger shell, its most performant offering still clocks in at a 4.4 seconds to go from 0-60MPH -- matching the most brawny variant of the Model S. And because it's devoid of a space-hogging ICE, that front portion's a trunk that Elon lovingly calls the "Frunk." Per GigaOm, the seven-seater will cost in the $50,000 to $70,000 range, with first deliveries of the "Signature Series" arriving in 2013 before mass production begins in 2014. If that sounds like you're kind of beat, Those interested can begin reservations on Tesla's website tomorrow at noon.

Gull wing passenger doors? Apparently it makes getting in to the third row really simple. What will they think of next.
An electric car that looks like a car, awesome.
I don't understand... they made an electric car that doesn't look completely stupid?

That's Tesla motors.

I believe you overlooked the gullwing doors
Too bad until we have a large source of alternative power, you'll just be filling your electric car up with mostly coal-plant power.
How far can it drive at max speed?

"everybody look at me I'm here"
Too bad these things are always extremely expensive.
"falcon wing" rear doors
Elon has a thing for Falcons doesn't he.
So, if I keep the back doors open, it will fly?
It'll have a range even smaller than the regular Tesla roadster, though. Crossovers aren't light.

Those gullwing doors are practical and don't look completely stupid.

We need better battery technology. Lighter, cheaper, more capacity. We don't have the technology.

Those wings that open up along the car to the back, can't remember their name, are much better. But these are cool.
Their factory is right down the street from me. I want to take a tour and check out this car.
I keep on looking it as a Maserati. Similar front 'mouth' thing and the logo looks similar too.
What if your car flips over.
You can't open the doors

They do look stupid, way too flashy.

This is the way to go

Hay look, a nice electric ca-

Yeah, I'll stick with my Tracker.
Edit: Hell, you can buy a Delorean for less.

My dad got his car (an 80's sedan) for $200.

If they did it the Mercedes way, they have explosive charges on the doors that shoot them off in just such an occasion.
How about no? I don't want the heavy batteries ruining the handling of an already poor handling platform, I don't want a 16 hour charge to go a hundred miles, I don't want an automatic transmission, and I don't want to contribute to the pollution the mines used to make the batteries create.

I learned this from watching Top Gear, yay

Sounds really practical.
Disappearing car doors are the most practical.

It's still ridiculously more efficient than burning gasoline in an ICE.

But you're fucked if something breaks in the wiring. I can also imagine it being quite screwed at really cold temperatures.
