So did Linus end up stealing Deadmau5's server or what?
Linus now lives there.
He owns a fuckin Tim Hortons sign.

I wouldn't be surprised if he owns a franchise nearby too
I'm a bit puzzled, what precisely does one use the Dolby Atmos room with the thingies for? I guess you can produce and play back sounds at maximum possible fidelity, but for what purpose? Not like anybody without similar equipment will be able to make use of the tracks produced with that.

He's making music and understandably wants the most fidelity he can get when making the music. You don't need the same quality of playback devices to hear everything but for mastering it's pretty important.
I'm still wicked jealous of his modular synth setup, I could burn days playing with those.
You heard me right! I found the only other person in Canada with a server room in his freaking house!
Linus, how often do you get out? I can count a number of people running at least three servers in one room of their house. Some of them even post here.

Yeah, but we're a bunch of anti-social nerds. How would he know that without knocking on our door?
Holy shit that distributed node setup that even uses the lan PCs.

send him a pic showing what's on your rack?

LTT has their own forums. I bet you $50 someone posted a pic of their home setup before the video went live.

one of those facepunchers being my brother.
he's got a server box sitting in his room. he runs various game servers.

Holy fuck that modular system, where do you even begin? learning every function there and how to use it all must be like memorizing a dictionary

Its really fun to see him play with the modular synths on streams:

I have a few rackmount audio units myself, but the highlight of my poor man's collection is my JV1080 that has been completely surpassed by VSTs and Kontakt :/
VSTs can't quite meet the tactile fun and weirdness that is inherent to modulars though, so there's that to still look forward to at least.

Getting maximum fidelity at venues when you use 100s of speakers.
there is software that pretends to be a modular synth system

I would never let linus in my studio like that with the way he man handles everything
Mixed the YouTube link up, that's a video showcasing the NASA Control Room.
He actually streams himself fucking around in his studio every once in a while, its a pretty fun watch

True, but still drones are pretty cheap compared to the hundreds of thousands dollars worth of equipment he has in there. That drone is pocket change as far as he is concerned

And Reaktor blocks also let you do lots of modular synth stuff, but its just never quite as natural or tactile as physical hardware.
I think physical hardware is really only good when you get buttons, knobs, and faders to play with. that's what I've learned from hardware purchases at least: the JV1080 kinda sucks because its so hard to tweak, but something like a JD-XA (friend has one, wew) can be a blast because of all the physical tweakability.

you can begin the dangerous addiction with a simple and easy to use unit before getting into the nitty-gritty of modulars link
(don't actually start you can't stop)

It's a really simple thing to set up in practice, but it's very cool nonetheless. I wish this was done in a lot more areas, to better utilize always-on PCs.

Yeah, for a long time I thought it was just old-man nostalgia when people said that analog synths were better but.. I'd have to agree at this point. Aside from the fact that the audio quality is just raw and physically powerful thanks to it being straight electricity rather than a signal passed through a cheap DAC on a digital synth or PC, the ability to just reach out and start fiddling with knobs is priceless. I recently picked up a Moog Sub 37 after having used soft synths for years and there's just no comparison: The sound is incredible and the feeling of tweaking everything with a dedicated knob and not having to fuck around with a mouse, screen or MIDI mappings is just awesome. I'm planning on getting a modular build going sometime soon..

Another cool bit about modulars is the fact that you can get such alien sounds from them. You can't really appreciate how truly flexible they are until you start messing with patches and start coming up with sounds that are so complex you can't even really process it. It's just this wall of almost scary sound that you can feel shaking your clothes.
