• Any idea what this loud knocking sound is?

I've got myself a 96 civic, 270k miles on it. It loves to burn oil and jolts when the auto transmission changes gear. But this is a new sound. Only does it while my rpm is around 2000 - 3000, and it does it regardless of it being in gear or not. I'm taking it to a mechanic tomorrow, but it'd help if anyone could give me some opinions.
Judging by how crisp the sound is, it might just be something on the outside of the engine knocking as a result of the vibration. Can't say for sure, though.
Sounds like some pretty severe internal engine vibration. Could be caused by a knackered bearing or ring somewhere, or maybe even a bit of piston slap. Alternatively the fuel mixture could be slightly lean - my dad's car sounded a bit like this when the EGR valve coked up and jammed. You might try putting some higher octane fuel in it and see if it goes away.
Does it have an auto tensioner on? Sounds similar to the vibrating sound I got when my auto tensioner packed up causing a bit of slack in the cambelt and vibrating/knocking between the rev ranges you said (Also Honda engine, H22). If it's only just started then you've caught it early and no damage will be done, try not to drive the car if you don't have to as you wouldn't want the belt slipping but it's not a major job and the part shouldn't set you back too much. Take the cam gear cover off and run the engine, see if you can see any movement / slack on the belt.
I have suffered from knocking/dieselish sounds for a while now. Got a new oil filter, changed my oils, cleaned up the "burn space" and also put some Forte engine "healers" in there, also switched to higher octane fuel. It did not go away completly, it still knocks, but it goes away when the oil pressure rises. My knocking is cause by these "Hydraulic valve risers" (That a direct translation from finnish), their rubber parts have been damaged a little (The old owner pretty much raped my HLX engine with low-quality oils and wrong gas(too low octane levels)). If it's because of those hydraulic risers, then it should be ok, if you get it to an oil change and also acquire/ask the oil changer to put some Forte-like substances in there (those healing stubstances). And now I was finally able to actually listen to your video (Everybody else left from work, so I'm alone and able to listen to some music etc now). That sound does not match my writings above, it sounds like the sounds are coming outside of the actual engine. There must a "over-vibrating" part which keeps touching some other part, I bet that it's nothing to be afraid of really. I'm still going to leave that wall of text there, if somebody happens to need it.
check your catalytic converter heat shield mine would only knock around like that 1500-2500 rpm.
I took it to a mechanic my dad is friends with. He said it was most likely a piston rod bearing. The sound is coming from inside the engine just behind the "T" in V-Tech and not some wobbly piece, that was the first thing I checked.
Check along the exhaust system, my dad's truck did this around 230K miles.
yeah...might be time to prepare for a new engine. Although its odd it only does that at that RPM. Timing belt auto-tensioner? take the cover off and check for tension in the belt maybe. hell if I know, I'm tired. Go punch bradley.
thats just your vtec kicking in, nothing to worry about
