Being a skinny is much more unhealthy than being fat – new study

Yet another study has shown that the so-called "obesity" epidemic sweeping the wealthy nations of the world has been massively over-hyped, as new results show that is is far more dangerous to be assessed as "underweight" than it is to be assessed even as "severely obese" - let alone merely "obese" or "overweight".
"There is currently a widespread belief that any degree of overweight or obesity increases the risk of death, however our findings suggest this may not be the case," says health prof Anthony Jerant, lead author of the study. "In the six-year timeframe of our evaluation, we found that only severe obesity was associated with an increased risk of death."
Most statistics in this field are still based on the now widely discredited Body Mass Index (BMI) system, under which people are assessed as "underweight", "normal", "overweight", "obese" or "severely obese". BMI, devised in the early 19th century by an obscure Belgian sociologist without medical qualifications, copes poorly with increases in height as it assumes the human body will scale up in mass in proportion to the square of height – which doesn't allow for the fact that bodies are three dimensional – and further fails to allow for the greater cross-sectional area needed in supporting structures to carry increasing weights.
Jerant and his colleagues, surveying nearly 51,000 Americans of all ages over a period of six years, found that "underweight" BMI was far and away the most dangerous category to be placed in. During the study period, the "underweight" subjects showed a risk of death no less than twice as high as the "normal" participants.
It was considerably safer to be "severely obese": the people in this category were just 1.26 times as likely to die as "normals". This was because more of them suffered from hypertension and diabetes, and once people without these two conditions were subtracted, the many non-diabetic, non-hypertense "severely obese" fatties were no more likely to die than "normal" people. People who were merely "obese" or "overweight" didn't suffer from diabetes or hypertension any more than "normal" people, and ran no increased risks.
"We hope our findings will trigger studies that re-examine the relationship of being overweight or obese with long-term mortality," comments Jerant.

REJOICE FACEPUNCHERS!
Because my inability to gain weight is going to kill me? :v:
Also, BMI's shit, use waist:hip ratio or something similar, which is more useful.
Being underweight is unhealthy?
Oh damn I did not see that coming
-snip-
"This just in, different ends of the spectrum are hazardous to health, in other news, sun shines grass grows and news articles post the obvious"
I mean, you would think a body that has layers of fat storage and sustenance would be better than somebody that's malnourished or has no 'stock' if you want to call it that.
Yeah but fat people look disgusting.
I eat fuck loads but never seem to put on any weight. Fast metabolism master race.
This seems to be criticizing the BMI scale more so than anything. Also there is a difference between "skinny" and underweight, the title is borderline sensational. Of course you're more likely to die if you're underweight, your body isn't properly fed, it's lacking various crucial nutrients and vitamins. When you're overweight at least you're still eating and getting those nutrients, albeit in larger quantities. It's kind of hard to over supply your body with vitamins by just eating food.
I'm about 10 pounds underweight and to make sure i'm not unhealthy i take various vitamin supplements which i otherwise wouldn't be getting from my almost non existent diet.

This. You will also start hating your metabolism if you ever start bodybuilding.
How is this news? This has been known for centuries.
I hate being skinny sometimes.
The only problem is when people here go "I'm skinny I have a fast metabolism fuck yeah" when in reality their body is full of visceral fat and that is very dangerous which can lead to type 2 diabetes and heart failure. Looking slim is one thing, being healthy is quite another. There have been numerous studies on it, U.K. scientists have created fat maps using MRI, close to half the women and more than half the men with normal scores had excessive levels of internal fat deposited around the heart and liver, and streaked through under used muscle much like a well-marbled steak. Diet alone is not enough to protect our bodies from disease. While dieting may help us look better in a bathing suit, it could also cause our bodies to change the way it stores fat.
In short, if you're one of those idiots that has a fast metabolism and constantly binging on junk food because "I can't get fat" then you're in for a wake up call because your insides are fully of it, wrapping around your organs and killing you as chemicals from the fat leak into your blood and organs and give you numerous worries. You don't even need to be eating junk food 24-7 for it to happen.
Being fat or skinny doesnt matter, as long as you eat well and get enough exercise
I'm chubby. So I guess I averaged out, again. Damnit.
In the end, we all die so meh. The tables turn later in life anyway. The skinny turn fat.

Well this could have said in a much less assholish and ostentatious way, but there is a reason why junk food is called junk food.

No the point is morons here who think they're safe because they can eat whatever they want and be okay are being naive, because their bodies are full of visceral fat on the inside and slowly killing them. They're no better than fat people.

I completely agree, when are people going to realise the only way to be healthy is to eat healthy and exercise. Diets are dangerous for your health and most of the time once you quit the diet you gain all the weight back, and this means that you end with more body fat than you started with.
I'm underweight. And I've been posting here on FP how unhealthy it is to be skinny like me. Yet no one agreed. It's about time I got a study to finally back up my words.
Well I've had hyperthyroidism for my life so that explains why my weight is 60kg. I'm 185cm too.
It's unhealthy to be at any extreme, this is something we've already known.
