Mexican Militiamen begin to Disarm or Join the Mexican Army
Mexican authorities and leaders of the self-defense groups who have been battling the Caballeros Templarios (Knights Templar) drug cartel in the western state of Michoacan for more than a year have signed an agreement spelling out the timetable for the militias to disarm.
The self-defense groups must begin surrendering their guns, which include AK-47 and AR-15 assault rifles, on Monday and completely disarm by May 10, officials said.
The militia leaders inked the disarmament deal Friday in a meeting at the headquarters of the 43rd Military Zone in Apatzingan, Michoacan, the largest city in the crime-ridden Tierra Caliente region.
The meeting was chaired by Alfredo Castillo Cervantes, the federal commissioner for security and development in Michoacan, and attended by the top two self-defense leaders, Estanislao Beltran and Jose Manuel Mireles.
Not all members of the self-defense groups will return to civilian life, however, as 516 have signed up for what will be the new Rural Defense Corps, which will operate under the control of the Mexican military.
Even with a majority of the Knights Templar destroyed, I really hope some of these militiamen are allowed to stay armed to defend themselves. They have done a fantastic job with destroying the Knights Templar in their region, and it would be a damn shame if a bunch of drug cartels took over again.
i dont know much about the problems of mexico but from reading this id say theyre disarming the wrong side.
I'm assuming those aren't their guns in the first place, not like they can't arm themselves anyway

Most of the firearms originally were firearms meant for hunting, target shooting, and otherwise. The rest of the firearms were slowly being seized from the Cartels after winning several battles against them. Also from reading other articles about this situation, supposedly the Mexican Government is going to form groups of light foot National Guards. Armed sorta like Game Rangers, but will be used to search and destroy drug cartels out in the country.
Well it can only be better if these guys are working with the government officially.

The Mexican government is probably one of the most corrupt organizations on the planet. They were better off on their own.

If the Mexican government was truly effective, the militia would have never been formed in the first place.

When the government is harassing these Militias who are effective, instead of supporting them as a cheaper alternative; you know how corrupt they really are.
It's kind of weird for me to think that this is happening only 300 miles away from where I live.

militias don't really have a good rep or history
regardless of how good their original intentions
And a few days later 516 people will turn up dead.

Neither do governments who allow themselves to be bullied/bought-out by drug cartels.
