• McAfee Patents Technology to Detect and Block Pirated Content
Security software company McAfee has patented a new technology that aims to prevent the public from accessing pirated movies and music online. The system, which expands the SiteAdvisor tool, can detect and block pirated material from any website and present users with authorized and legal alternatives. McAfee says the technology will help steer consumers to authorized services and thereby prevent costly lawsuits. More like steer away any possibility of people buying your software and going to other alternatives like Avast or MSE
Source
Whelp, that's completely fucked if the ISP's implement it. There's no telling what a program with that responsibility for screening on such a large scale won't make some cataclysmic fuckups (like shutting down the internet, or allowing users to be tracked in their every move by a security company, like having a security guard follow you everywhere in the city so you don't commit crime)
does anyone even use mcafee anymore
So, this means that other companies can't implement this themselves without paying McAfee, right? I don't use McAfee, so they can go ahead and keep the patent!
More like steer away any possibility of people buying your software and going to other alternatives like Avast or MSE
I believe the language implies it will be implemented by the ISP, not the end user.
McAfee says the technology will help steer consumers to authorized services and thereby prevent costly lawsuits.
Why does McAfee care if I get sued or not?
Why does McAfee care if I get sued or not?
It is fancy PR lingo for saying we want to instill fear by making it easier to catch people.
Wonder how long it will be until there is a plugin made that circumvents this if it were implemented by an ISP. But how would this even work though if it was used by your ISP? What if you're not using your ISP's DNS.
Why does McAfee care if I get sued or not?
Lawsuits directed towards the ISPs and other service providers. Essentially (and incredibly simply) Hollywood is threatening to take all of the ISP's to court if they don't start controlling how their users access the internet, and McAfee is stepping in to profit by providing an already existing solution to be possibly implemented.
More like steer away any possibility of people buying your software and going to other alternatives like Avast or MSE
people don't already? so they patented the tech so no other company can detect and remove piracy? thanks macafee, i won't buy your product and no one else can put that kind of tech on the market woo
Wouldn't intercepting every url entered into a browser slow down web browsing? Even if the process of checking a url on a blacklist would not take too long?
Source
Should have expected this to be a TorrentFreak article.
Who would install this crap?

[editline]25th April 2013[/editline]
Who would install this crap?
This is being aimed at ISPs.
You are not the target audience, the ISPs are. [editline]25th April 2013[/editline] This is being aimed at ISPs.
Where does it say that? [editline]25th April 2013[/editline] And I honestly don't see anything wrong with it.
The point is that this tech is extremely invasive. At this stage, it intercepts every url you enter to see if you're allowed to access it. However, in order for the system to truly work and block all pirated content it would have to intercept your search engine queries too, which would essentially turn it into an ISP-level keylogger depending on how such a function is implemented. If you can't see something wrong with your ISP scrutinizing everything you type into your address bar, then I don't know what to tell you. Piracy or no that shit does not happen on my computer with or without my consent.
It seems to be an optional browser plugin for their security tools, nothing wrong here
If they make such a thing mandatory it's like a self inflicted fatality.

But how would it be any different in function from something like this? I think we can say that Piracy is different from Theft. I do not wish to imply that it is not immoral, only that it should not be treated the same way.
If someone came to my house and saw that I built an awesome chair, and he'd copy that chair without saying he invented it, I'd be proud. It's not like Pirates take credit for making the games. Hell, most of them even tell you to buy the game as soon as you get cash.
Thank goodness I unistall mcafee and replace it with Avast! in ever prebuilt pc I get my hands on.

Sucks for you, guess you don't get to make money from those people who now have your chair. It's okay though, they weren't going to buy your chair anyway. They should still be able to have it though, right?

How would you like if you had these scanners at your doorstep and they would check you every time you got home. And with the "stolen" tags being assigned by an arbitrary institution, possibly ending up on anything you find outside, without you having any control over it.
Yeah but what if you were trying to sell that chair to make money, and he just gave out a free "copy" to all his friends, and they gave a free copy to all their friends, and so on. This applies to SOPA/CISPA etc.
People who pirate because they are cheap (no it doesn't fucking matter if you're poor, it's not an excuse) are disgusting.

You need to be able to provide chairs at higher comfort and convenience than some hack who barely beats them together. Like Valve. Not go around, break into houses of other people, and shout "YOU DIDN'T PAY FOR THIS CHAIR, YOU ARE GOING TO JAIL".
