At this point they're denying him for his own protection. People are still pissed about what he did.
Deserves it. Not just because of shooting Lennon per-say, but you deserve the consequences of killing a famous person the majority of the population admire just for attention, you don't just get away from that and he knew what he was getting into before he did it.
