Washington DC - -(Ammoland.com)- On May 7th 2014 New Hampshire Representative Timothy Horrigan (D-Durham) stood on the state house floor and argued against legislation forbidding the use of EBT cards for guns, saying such a ban “is a blatant violation of the Second Amendment.”The legislation–SB203–says: “Any person who receives public assistance is prohibited from using an EBT card or cash obtained with an EBT card to gamble or to purchase tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, lottery tickets, firearms, or adult entertainment.” SB203 also prohibits using “an EBT card or cash obtained with an EBT card” for “Tattoos and Body Piercing.” In voicing opposition to the firearms ban, Horrigan said: The firearms ban is a blatant violation of the Second Amendment. Cash benefit recipients presumably have the same rights as the rest of us to purchase guns for hunting, sports shooting, or even self-defense. Obviously they don’t have much money to spend on that, but they do have the right under the Second Amendment to do so. Horrigan said “the inclusion of a firearms ban [also seemed] ironic” because many of the bill’s sponsors “were generally pro-Second Amendment.” Follow AWR Hawkins on Twitter @AWRHawkins
AmmoLand Yeah...
Great. Now some nut wants me to pay for everyone else to be able to buy guns? Least I'm not living $5,000 under the poverty line and still not qualifying for EBT anymore.
Wait a minute, a DEMOCRAT is suggesting this? A DEMOCRAT? WHAT!?
Wait a minute, a DEMOCRAT is suggesting this? A DEMOCRAT? WHAT!?
Anti-Gun, as well.
EBT cards are not specifically food stamps
I'm pro gun and what is this.
EBT cards are not specifically food stamps
True, but sorta in bad flavor to buy things outside of food, clothing, essentials for school and all that.

People need more than just food.
Anti-Gun, as well.
WHAT!? Has the world gone mad?

You receive fucking aide for a reason, because you can't afford all the basic needs in life, not because you need some more lottery tickets and booze.
Food Stamps, not Gun Stamps. Silly misguided Democrats!
True, but sorta in bad flavor to buy things outside of food, clothing, essentials for school and all that.
yeah I know but saying "food stamps" in the title make it sound like he wants you to be able to buy "food and also firearms" like it's a whitelist system when it's actually a blacklist system
Alright look, i'm all for the right to bear arms. That being said: Fuck these people, fucking seriously? EBT is for fucking food items so that you can supply your family with its basic essentials, not a firearm. If you can't afford a firearm, you probably can't afford to keep it safely, nor can you afford to feed its ammo requirements in order to be a proficient user. Which means you probably shouldn't own it in the first place.
Maybe the idea is so that you can hunt your own food. Which is far cheaper, and produces a lot of food.
Hey if it will pay for some .30 carbine rounds, where do I sign up? :v:
denying tobacco and alcohol kind of seems a bit overkill, which is probably part of the reason why the guy is going against it. People need more than just food.
um yeah no federal aid is for necessities, not fucking drugs
denying tobacco and alcohol kind of seems a bit overkill, which is probably part of the reason why the guy is going against it. People need more than just food.
While you have a point, and I honestly have no problem with using EBT to pay for brake service(You're nobody without a working, safe to drive car in America, hence this would qualify) or a plumber(Having working toilets and access to fresh, clean water anybody?) if the need arises, guns and ammo are a hobby. Hobbies should never be covered under federal aid programs. Also booze and recreational drugs shouldn't be covered. You should be able to pay for your properly prescribed medications with EBT but not a pack of smokes and a beer. You don't need beer and 'baccy to survive.
Part of being a human is having a hobby and relaxing. Adults are allowed reasonable use of tobacco, alcohol, etc. Not having a job or being below the poverty line does not exclude you from these rights. If the government wants to give food or cash benefits, those benefits (especially cash benefits) ought to be used in whatever way the recipient that sees as fitting. The government gives these benefits because it sees it as a public service to provide assistance to those in need: not extortion to behave in certain ways. The government can provide reasonable suggestions as to proper use when the program is initiated to prevent possible misuse or poor decisions. Perhaps even introduce some free counseling or community college classes. This is a matter of trust: hedging charity and care with mistrust and regulation inevitably leads to groups feeling outcast or rejected. This leads to mistrust of those who are trying to help. This leads to more suffering.
This takes "Biting the bullet" to a whole new level..
Well, I mean, what if you ate the gun though? On a plate, maybe with a knife and fork. Then it's food and therefore you can use food stamps for 'em! Check mate, gubbermint.
EBT isn't enough money to buy a rifle/glass/ammo/ammo to practice/range fees/safety measures. Even if it was designed to let them hunt, are they going to provide hunting licenses for free? As well as hunting education courses? EBT isn't a lot of money at all, if you've got money left over at the end of the month, you're probably neglecting your kids/self.. which would again.. make you a shitty parent. Maybe the idea is that people are fucking idiots.
That's a very good point, but it got me thinking. Why can't we provide hunting licenses, classes, etc... for free to people on assistance? Down here, you can easily go hunting/fishing with basic equipment. It would give them an avenue to provide for themselves and their families and be able to spend assistance money on other things they need to live. There are PLENTY of wildlife management areas around here which are free to use. Obviously safety would be of utmost importance, but it could help out a lot of families in need....
Why not buy food with guns? I imagine paying for lobster with kobe beef and caviar with a Masada...
