My friend is Russian and her uncle and aunt live in Moscow they think Putin is like "the savior of Russia" and they're extremely anti gay and anti Ukraine
This should be interesting. Waiting for Karimatrix.
Well somebody rated this funny... Yep its Karimatrix.
That's quite interesting video reel, however I believe this belongs in Videos and Flash Movies board, just like other Vice videos.
i've honestly just wanted to say that it's pretty much how it is. There are indeed propaganda and pseudo patriotism and there is not much to add to video besides few commentary on specific examples it provides... but then i readed two irrelevant posts and realised that there is no reason to join a discussion whatsoever, sadly. enjoy the zingers, yeah, i posted.
That's quite interesting video reel, however I believe this belongs in Videos and Flash Movies board, just like other Vice videos.
I do believe it fits the specifications for this section.
Articles - Don't post articles without a source, if it's from a magazine, scan it. If there's only a news video with no accompanying text you may post it. - Articles must not be more than 2 weeks old. - Don't post entire articles. Your quote snippet should not go beyond a summary of the story. - If there's a breaking news update on TV that hasn't reached the Internet yet, you may post it but be sure to add a source when it's available. - Don't post articles from unreliable sources that just blame everything on conspiracy theories. - No blogs or articles from blog-type websites (eg. Gawker). - Don't post opinion pieces. - If you are posting about a contentious issue or your primary source is state media, find at least 2 independent sources for your story. - Don't post satire, if you happen to make the colossal fuckup of doing so unknowingly you will still be banned for being so goddamn stupid.
I didn't mean to give you that impression.
I do believe it fits the specifications for this section.
If we discuss semantics, I believe the rule means sort of a news coverage sort of like this, but whatever. Didn't know if anyone else noticed this but thought it was pretty funny: [vid]http://i.imgur.com/lPqUrWx.webm[/vid] GIF version if I did the webm thing wrong: http://i.imgur.com/lPqUrWx.gifv It's the girl from Les Miserables fyi.
It's the hospital mocking the charity, absolutely ridiculous.
That's actually pretty scary. Great insight though. There's someone with Russian origins in my class; I think I might ask her what she thinks of this, just to hear her honest thoughts.
Despite some of my more anti- Putin posts, I do honestly want to know what Russians feel about this. I do know not all of the Russians here agree on the same things when it comes to their country. I mean, in the interesting of being realistic, the US, where I live, has propaganda as well. Especially in regards to countries like Iran, and even Russia. May not be nearly as overt, but you can notice it at times.
"...their next goal is to establish an Ukrainian Taliban. You heard me right, and war with Russia."
It's amazing how hamfisted their propaganda is, even more amazing how well it works.
Russia is fucked
It's amazing how hamfisted their propaganda is, even more amazing how well it works.
It doesn't. Propaganda by definition is supposed to influence the opinion of general public. General public doesn't give a fuck, the only people who actually pay attention already have their opinions set in stone, they aren't changing it no matter what. That's a large number of people still, but not anywhere near the numbers propaganda is supposed to influence. That's the ones who vote, and how many people vote? 20%, and of them only around 50% actively vote for Putin's course. The problem arises from the fact that this minority goes completely unchallenged.
It's amazing how hamfisted their propaganda is, even more amazing how well it works.
A large part of it is likely due to the lacking availability of any alternative media/source of information. When there is no opposing opinion voiced you can make all kinds of crazy statements seem like truth.
A large part of it is likely due to the lacking availability of any alternative media/source of information. When there is no opposing opinion voiced you can make all kinds of crazy statements seem like truth.
The is a lot of alternative sources of information, but they are mostly internet-based. And a lot of people older then, say, 35-40, who are basically in charge of the country these days, often just dont have enough skills to read these souces as the only thing they do good on computer is playing solitaire.
Why are people so surprised by this? The west's 'Propaganda Machine' is far wider reaching and influential over the people.

And a lot of people older then, say, 35-40, who are basically in charge of the country these days, often just dont have enough skills to read these souces as the only thing they do good on computer is playing solitaire.
Indeed, that is my point, hence why I said "lacking availability". While I can't speak for how exactly it is in Russia, I presume that, like most elsewhere in the world, a considerable amount of people (if not majority, at least in older age groups as you mention) get most if not all of their news from traditional sources like television, newspapers or even the official websites of said newspapers. Seeing how this is all fairly one-sided (regarding certain issues) and tightly regulated by the state, many are as a result not exposed to anything critical of what they hear, and thus what is broadcast can be made more radical and still be believed.
Why are people so surprised by this? The west's 'Propaganda Machine' is far wider reaching and influential over the people.
How, exactly? Last time I checked I can say negative things about the government and I can also say that it's okay to not be straight, and I don't have to fear the police kicking down my door or someone mysteriously giving me a copper jacketed time out.
If there's ever a fuck that needs not giving, you can count on the Russians to be there to not give it.
Damn....... Thanks for Posting, gotta read more about Putin & Russia before I can make a fair asssessment

Russia is at war with a fascist military junta that's actively trying to exterminate ethnic Russians, so it should be obvious that they don't want subversive elements politically active.
How, exactly? Last time I checked I can say negative things about the government and I can also say that it's okay to not be straight, and I don't have to fear the police kicking down my door or someone mysteriously giving me a copper jacketed time out.
Well you see, the thing is, I can do that too. In fact, I did, many times. Publicly, during rallies and such, I even gave a speech a couple of times. And literally nothing happened, like, at all, not even policemen standing around asked me anything or even spoke to me, - they don't give a fuck, why would they? So it's not like we in Russia are anywhere close to something like North Korea or Iran, nothing like that. There's only danger if you're actually dangerous, or can be viewed as such by some of the most paranoid sections of government. In fact... you're completely free to trash the government and even Putin personally. You won't do it on TV, obviously, but in public, maybe if you're invited/given time to speak on forums at Universities, public meetings, rallies and so on. As long as you don't threaten someone's economic, monetary interests, or doing anything extraordinary (think Pussy Riot) you're completely fine. You don't dig corruption - you're free to trash anyone you want, nothing will happen from the side of the state. There're exceptions, of course, I don't mean to say that Russia is a completely free society in this sense - far from that. There're laws that prevent you from saying certain things (example: "Crimea is Ukrainian" is "public call for separatism"). But it's not like "shut up, sit down, praise Putin or else" either. It's mafia rule - unpredictable, but as long as you know the simple rules you can make an educated guess on your chances.
How, exactly? You're already being indirectly influenced by propaganda which demonizes Russia (and it works considering you unironically spout things like this) and it works in your government's favor because it gives them even more control and gets you off their backs.
gets you off their backs.
I am sure as hell that no amount of "western propaganda" would throw people off US' back. People will always bitch about something, especially if things are incredibly minor.
